FedEx Freight | More bids lost next bid!

Most of the LTL carriers have, more or less, the same fuel surcharge. The truckload market is different and there does not appear to be many published rates, but they range from 15% to 30% based on miles traveled. You will typically get a better rate because you’re buying the whole truck. Some LTL carriers have a sliding scale as well.

If it were so much cheaper to use truckload carriers as brass mentions we’d be seeing the opposite of what’s going. LTL carriers would be in the position of a lot of truckload carriers now, especially the smaller ones that don’t have the pricing power, bankrupt.

Can you cite a source to back up that statement?

Never ever had a customer switch carriers over the fuel surcharge. Also, truckload carriers add fuel surcharges too. It's become the industry standard money maker.
Can I provide a link?...no
I'm simply going by what some of my customers have told me in the past..
And I said nothing about American switching carriers...
They'd rather pay one fuel charge and and double up on the shipment going to the same place.
Is that the only reason?...! Maybe not, but when it happens we get less shipments from them.
I can't imagine this is the only few customers in the whole system who do this.

The more carriers that go out of business, the tighter capacity will get and at some point the fuel surcharges will be the least of your concern. People forget how cyclical trucking is.

It’s a moot point regardless. The percentage saved would be offset by the cost of the whole trailer. If you have that much freight to begin with, why would you be looking at LTL at all? It’s not 5 years ago, we don’t do a ton of truckload stuff anymore.

I'm talking a shipper holding a 10,000 or a 14,000lb shipment and doubling it up one a week instead of a couple of times a week.
I have two that do this if time is not the deciding factor...
They have both told me it saves two separate fuel surcharges...
Is it the total deciding factor?.. I have no idea..
I'm just relaying what I've been told.

We're still making assumptions, with little actual data to back it up. The reality is ALL carriers have fuel surcharges. AND the concept of saving up for a whole truckload is also not new, and is NOT a significant factor. The number of shippers that fit into that niche you created, is so small. Almost immeasurable. And most importantly, NOT the target shipper for an LTL company. FXFE rarely targets 10 - 14,000# shipments. NOT what pays the bills.

I forgot...you know every place in the country FedEx ships and the weights..
I'm telling you from the customers perspective and what I've actually seen them do.

A friend of mine is an owner/operator and said that several of the trucks at the truck stop that he uses have not moved since November. The owners took driving positions with large carriers since the rates were so bad. He went to an orientation with a big company that had its own distribution center but it sounded so bad at the orientation that he never went out with a trainer. He is really struggling.

For the first time in what seems to be a pretty long time (1 year) we have finally gained runs instead of losing.. 2 runs gained on our next upcoming bid

More could’ve been gained but I feel like they want to keep the extraboard large to cover the imbalance lanes

Just rebid in Nashville. Added 2 runs. Running extras in Kcy lane but didn't add any there. 34 extraboard, but using 4+ in the city daily because we are missing pickups and deliveries. Lost several customers. One customer we lost we didn't pickup up for three days. It's so bad Doak Slay showed up in Nashville.

Oh and we are still doing Express and Ground stuff when we can't even take care of our customers.

Main issue is dock. Can't get anything loaded on time. City drivers getting out 2-3 hours late. Our dock is a joke. They hide behind isms and phobias to not work. Stand and talk constantly. If management tries corrective action they run to HR and get away with it.

This is all corporates fault! You allowed people to cry racism, sexism, discrimination etc etc etc. Now you have a portion of your work force that is destroying what left of your company!
Everything that goes woke goes BROKE!

Good to hear someone in our region is seeing some improvement. We just had another guy quit and go to southeastern.
