From what I understand, he was a dockworker. He was in a marked crosswalk, walking to his car when he was hit. This is a very sad and ENTIRELY preventable tragedy. All involved have my heartfelt condolences. So sad..Not casting blame on anyone but I have seen switchers flying around in lots at every company ive ever worked at.Surprised we don't hear more stories like this.Condolences.
Was the deceased person a driver, dockworker, hosteler, etc???Damn, hate to hear stories like this.So preventable and tragic.
Sad to hear sadly crosswalks mean nothing more but a place to park where I'm at.

Not sure what is meant by falling equipment.
It's a tragedy. Not blaming anyone, but how do you not notice a truck coming at you? I did a few stints in the yard and if I heard a unit coming my way I took notice.
I wonder how long before it's mandatory to wear reflective vests. I remember when that guy @ ABF Chicago Heights terminal was ran over and killed. After that, they made it mandatory to wear the vests at ABF terminals.
It was raining hard he had umbrella tilted down he never saw or heard truck , switcher never saw him til he was past him, he was retiring soonFrom what I understand, he was a dockworker. In Chicago Heights, pedestrians have the right of way. And ALL motorized equipment is required to stop before intersecting ANY marked crosswalk! I'm not implying this happens every time, but that is company policy. And I know W/L are issued to both pedestrians who don't stay in crosswalks and drivers who fail to yield.
Parking lots should not be where we have to walk to them and switching buggies or tractors go. Period.
We have to walk right through 70 yards of area that there is all kinds of traffic. It's dangerous as all hell. There are ways to limit the dangers. But they don't care.
They do now. But that will pass. Accidents happen. I am so sorry this one did.
This should not have happened.
My condolences again to the family and friends of this man.
I feel bad for the hostler also. Omgoodness. That has to be a horrible feeling and to have to live with that.
