CRST Expedited case involving a car that hit parked truck headed to trial

https://www.ccjdigital.com/crst-exp...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-2

The 2014 fatality occurred on I-80 east near Rawlins, after the CRST driver parked in the emergency lane and turned on his hazard lights. The trucker had driven the first shift and had just asked his team driver, who had been resting, to drive. Moments later, David L. Crashley’s Mazda CX-9 collided with the truck’s trailer at highway speed. It is unknown why Crashley left the traveling lanes, hadn’t braked or tried to avoid the accident."

"He noted that the accident occurred about a mile past an off ramp leading to a truck stop, and less than a mile from the next exit. Traffic signs in the vicinity state parking on the shoulder is only permitted in emergencies.

A trial date has not been announced."

It’s a bad deal for all involved but....why in the hell anyone stops on the shoulder for a “non-emergency” is beyond me...and even worse are the assholes who pull right out into traffic from a dead stop on the shoulder instead of using the emergency lane to attempt to get up to speed first!!

CRST should’ve NEVER stopped in the emergency lane to “change drivers” (that’s not an emergency) and the motorist should’ve NEVER ran into the back of a parked vehicle in the emergency lane.
Should be interesting to see who’s eventually found to be at fault...but we all know it’ll be the truck driver(s)!!

Agree 100%. There should be "dual fault" in this case. Both contributing, IMHO.

Stopping on an exit ramp is no better. The entrance ramp is far safer, due to the lower speed, IMHO.

Boeing Declines Union’s Invitation To Bargain, Setting Up Micro-Unit Appeal

"It is now being reported that Boeing is declining to negotiate with the micro-unit, as it intends to appeal the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) decision to allow the vote to proceed. Boeing has stated from the outset that it does not believe a micro-unit is appropriate, but the full NLRB in Washington, D.C., has not yet formally weighed in on the issue."

UPS, Teamsters Reach Tentative Deal on Five-Year Contract

http://www.ttnews.com/articles/ups-teamsters-reach-tentative-deal-five-year-contract

"According to information released by the Teamsters, current full-time workers will receive pay increases of $4.15 per hour during the time of the contract. The union said full-time UPS drivers now earn on average nearly $75,000 a year, or $36 an hour.

Pay for part-time employees will increase from $10 to $13 beginning Aug. 1, and to $15.50 by Aug.1, 2022. The current four-year wage progression from $10 an hour to $12.50 per hour has been eliminated.

Other terms that were reached include increased pension benefits for full- and part-time employees, and language that would take many loads currently moved by railroad off the rails and shifted to newly created sleeper teams. The union said this change could result in at least 2,000 new full-time jobs for members, and sleeper-team jobs are the highest paying in the bargaining unit.

The deal also includes language to have “a new full-time combination driver” who will start at $20.50 an hour and reach a top scale of $34.79 in five years. Many of those employees could work in different units on weekdays, such as loading trucks, and then drive on weekends, especially as UPS considers adding Sunday delivery service."

Carrier ordered to pay driver $17k for refused load firing

https://www.ccjdigital.com/carrier-...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-1

"Poulter had worked nearly three years as a truck driver when she began at CCT. Her CCT route ran from the Lathrop-Stockton area of California to Reno, Nevada, and included the Donner Pass. On Dec. 18, 2015, she picked up an intermodal load and stopped a Stockton truck scale. She reported to Rotan her tandem axle weight was 600 pounds over the DOT limit of 34,000 pounds. Rotan told her to slam the load, which is to adjust freight by pulling or speeding forward and braking. He fired her for insubordination after they exchanged a series of texts and calls over the issue."
