"Revenue grew at the Supply Chain & Freight division that includes less-than-truckoad carrier UPS Freight, but Chief Financial Officer Richard Peretz said adjusted profits decreased because both parts of the division, freight forwarding and LTL, are facing shippers’ markets as both industries currently have a surplus of freight-handling capacity.

On an annual basis UPS remained profitable despite the pension charge, earning $3.43 billion, or $3.87 a share, down from $4.84 billion, or $5.35."

"Americans for Modern Transportation, a coalition of some of the nation’s largest shippers, deliverers and retailers, is firing back at critics of efforts to allow 33-foot trailers on the nation’s highways. The coalition includes the nation’s most vocal proponents of 33-foot trailers — FedEx and UPS."

“Fully utilized on the national highway network, twin 33s in particular can reduce carbon emissions by 4.4 billion pounds, save 204 million gallons of fuel, and eliminate 912 crashes over the course of a year — all without compromising the condition or safety of our nation’s highways,” the letter said."

Talent matters, especially in trucking. But it’ll stay hard to find and keep.

"First, while being able to offer excellent compensation and benefit packages often got cited as “important recruiting tactics,” being able to attract new employees with an “amazing corporate culture” or a “company’s unique industry position” ranked as the “next-most” important strategies, according to the firm’s poll.

An environment that is creative, inspiring and fun (63.4%); being industry-leading and innovative (54.8%); and having the chance to work on interesting projects (51.6%) were cited most often as contributing to an exceptional corporate culture, Harris Allied said.

[Think this kind of stuff is too over the top for trucking? Remember, you’ll be recruiting mainly Millennials and Generation Z workers from here on out – and they respond to such incentives.]"

WOW! Certainly a bold move. Kind of a big deal. Or is it a bit of leverage?

We know that Amazon can't really compete with FedEx on efficient delivery. But can FedEx really compete with Amazon on fulfillment? Interesting, to say the least.

I wasn't fully aware of what exactly the complete fulfillment process entailed, so I looked at the Amazon model. Pretty extensive and all inclusive.

Again, BOLD move by FedEx!
