It is coming and those who keep saying never need to go apply at the Buggy Whip company. Will trucking jobs be replaced next year in mass, no. The race to reduce cost will eventually remove many delivery positions in our lifetime. Robotics, autonomous vehicles and drones will impact our industry.

It looks good on paper, but the lawsuits for remote drivers unable to adapt to ever changing situations due to upload/download lag will probably put an end to the practice in relatively short order.

"Our remote drivers will pilot trucks from the door of the distribution center to the highway, then remotely engage the autonomous system," Seltz-Axmacher said. "When the truck gets close to the off-ramp, another remote driver will take control of the vehicle" to its final destination.

Seltz-Axmacher said Starsky already has begun testing its system and expects to "remove human drivers from certain vehicles by the end of the year."
Does this mean off ramps will start looking like Home Depot parking lots?? Out of work/semi-retired drivers hanging out looking for trucks to drive to customers??

I envision seeing drone trucks stalled at every off ramp, blocking 4-wheelers because the remote connection drops or won't engage at all.

And it'll still somehow be our fault.

"“We’re actually shopping online more than shopping in stores,” said James Stevenson, vice president of sales for TMW Systems. “It’s a massive shift, and if you think about that, it’s what we as consumers expect."

"The speed of the change and on-time final-mile demand is going to hit truckload carriers the hardest, and will be a boon for many less-than-truckload carriers, he said."

U.S. jobless claims near 44-year low; rate hike expected this month

"The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell to near a 44-year low last week, pointing to further tightening of the labor market even as economic growth appears to have remained moderate in the first quarter.

The stronger labor market and rising inflation could push the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Several Fed officials have in recent days suggested the U.S. central bank could increase borrowing costs soon.

"The jobs market is strengthening and we are near full employment. The Fed is worried that the jobs market will overheat and that is fanning the discussion of a March rate hike," said Ryan Sweet, senior economist at Moody's Analytics in Westchester, Pennsylvania"

"The differences were even more stark in metrics that drivers and carriers tend to trust as better correlating to safety performance, those outside of CSA BASIC scores, such as out-of-service inspections and volume of DOT-recordable crashes. High-turnover carriers had a “driver out-of-service rate 189 percent higher,” Bryan said, than low-turnover carriers. The vehicle OOS volume for those high-turnover carriers was 300 percent higher.

As regards reportable crashes, the high-turnover group showed 1,177 total. The low showed just 303, a huge difference."

"...the agency followed the review requirements imposed when lawmakers suspended provisions that included requiring consecutive nighttime off-duty periods (1 a.m. to 5 a.m.) to reset a driver’s weekly work limits."

“We knew from the beginning that these Obama administration restrictions provided no benefit to safety,” Spear said, “and in light of the DOT’s findings—corroborated by the DOT Inspector General—it is good for our industry and for the motoring public that they will be done away with permanently.”
