They had been hitting New Penn pretty hard giving customers a very low pallet rate. Had a sales man tell me he didn't understand how they could even move freight so cheap.

Maybe some carriers (not saying any names ). should take notice that the DOT will take action if you insist on running old, outdated, equipment that is not up to their safety standards.

Your partly right but A driver can only write up what he sees and finds. And a mechanic can only fix those things. There is no way for a driver to foresee what's going to break on older or newer equipment but chances are 15 year old trucks with a million and half miles are going to have problems that a driver doesn't detect in his pretrip. SAFTEY is about prevention.
