YRC shares sink after debt exchange

YRC shares lose more than half their value after company announces debt exchange

YRC Worldwide Inc. shares plunged more than 50 percent Monday after the struggling trucking company said it is launching a debt exchange offer that could drastically reduce current shareholders' stakes.
The move is part of YRC's effort to get access to cash and avoid a bankruptcy filing, which has been rumored for months. It has struggled to integrate two of it units and suffered through a dramatic falloff in freight demand amid the recession.
Overland Park, Kan. YRC said it intends to launch an exchange offer of $536.8 million in 8 1/2 percent notes for common and preferred stock equal to 95 percent of its common shares, with a provision to give stock options to the company's union employees. YRC offered options equal to 15 percent of the company's common stock to union workers in exchange for wage and pension cuts earlier this year.

Old Dominion, a Trucker for the Long Haul

One of the fastest-growing trucking companies, Old Dominion is positioned to participate fully in the recovery

How U.S. trucking firms are faring is a handy indicator of the state of the economy. Not surprisingly, the trucking industry has been having a tough time since 2007 as freight demand has tumbled because of the economic downturn.
Analysts forecast that industry earnings will continue to stay under pressure through the end of 2009, but they point out that certain trucking companies are bound to drive themselves out of the economic rut sooner than others.
One such trucker whose stock has started to rebound amid signs of an economic recovery—including the Oct. 29 release of the first positive quarterly GDP report since the second quarter of 2008—is Old Dominion Freight Line.
Even so, some bulls figure the stock will surpass its 52-week high and hit 40 in a year.

YRC Worldwide: Trucking in Trouble

YRC WorldWide (YRCW) is tanking over 50% on bankruptcy speculation. The large trucking company has been entangled in brutal labor renegotiation’s and is at the heart of the economic downturn with their highly economically sensitive transport based business.
On Friday the company reported a $158.7MM loss which was followed up by a debt exchange announcement this morning. Investors are growing increasingly concerned that the announcement could result in an eventual Chapter 11 filing. Although the company is having cost difficulties (primarily labor related) the weakness at the company is primarily economically related.
“The operating environment remains very challenging as we continue to face a difficult economy that appears to have stabilized, but is not showing any signs of sustained positive momentum. We remain cautiously optimistic that the economy has bottomed out, but it remains too early to know for sure. We’re not anticipating any growth in the economy for the remainder of this year and at least for the first half of next year.”

YRC Worldwide debt exchange would make bondholders owners; stock plummets

YRC Worldwide Inc.’s bondholders are on track to own 95 percent of the company, which could mean the resignation of seven of YRC’s nine directors, if a debt-exchange offer planned to start this week is successful.
The announcement appears as an “out-of-court restructuring and a positive for YRCW’s long-term viability at the expense of current shareholders,” Longbow Research analyst Lee Klaskow said in a Monday note.
If the preferred stock were converted and combined with the common stock allotment, the noteholders would hold 95 percent of the company’s common stock. A Monday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission detailed a plan to convert preferred stock to common stock, contingent on shareholder approval.

How to Prepare Your Portfolio if the Market Sells Off

Investors accustomed to seeing strong stock market gains in the October-February period, may be wondering what this year will bring after the stunning rally that began in April.
Much of that has been based on the assumption that recession would yield to recovery and then expansion. There is, however, a contrarian view that says the market is already way ahead of the economic reality and that the rally to date, never mind the end-of-year bounce, is wishful thinking.

FedEx Express executive to take wheel of $4.6 billion trucking unit

Con-way Profit Drops 67 Percent

Tough pricing competition, excess capacity, low demand cut deeply
Con-way profit fell by two-thirds in the third quarter from $40.5 million a year ago to $13.5 million in the three months ending Sept. 30. Lower prices, squeezed by excess capacity and weak demand, led to the decline, the trucking and logistics company said.
Operating profit in the 2009 third quarter was $41.1 million, down 48 percent compared to $78.9 million earned in the third quarter a year ago. Revenue was $1.13 billion, down 17.5 percent from last year's third-quarter revenue of $1.37 billion, “as the recessionary economy curtailed demand for services,” said Con-way.
“Overall, the business environment continues to present formidable challenges, characterized by weak demand, excess capacity and pricing pressure. We expect these conditions to persist in the near term, diminishing the prospects for earnings growth," said Con-way President and CEO Douglas W. Stotlar.
“While pricing is likely to remain under pressure, we believe the increased network volumes put us in a better position competitively; we are now instituting specific measures to improve operating efficiency," said Stotlar.

S&P, Wall Street Slap YRC Debt Swap

Stock price tumbles, S&P lowers credit rating

YRC Worldwide stock tanked on Wall Street this week as the company launched a debt-for-equity exchange one analyst compared to a “controlled bankruptcy.”
And Standard & Poor's put a cloud over the deal, cutting the company's credit rating and saying YRC Worldwide had effectively defaulted on its debt obligations with the swap.
S&P lowered its corporate credit rating to 'CC' from 'CCC' and put YRC Worldwide on its CreditWatch list. "Under our criteria, we view a formal exchange offer at a discount by a company under substantial financial pressure as a distressed-debt exchange and tantamount to a default," Standard & Poor's said.
YRC Worldwide’s stock plunged 64 percent to close at $1.32 per share Monday on news that the debt-for-equity swap could create more than 1.5 billion new shares. The share price then fell as much as 20 percent during trading on Tuesday

Some trucking analysts say the deal appears to bring long-sought financial breathing room to a company that has sought repeated extensions on debt covenants. However, more than one analyst compared the debt-stock swap to a virtual Chapter 11 reorganization.

Berkshire Hathaway to Buy BNSF

Buffett says $34 billion buy puts investor 'all-in' on American economy

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway announced Tuesday it will buy the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad in a transaction worth an estimated $34 billion.
Buffett said in a statement the outright purchase of the Class 1 railroad was “an all-in wager on the economic future of the United States.”
Berkshire Hathaway, which already owns more than 22 percent of the Fort Worth, Texas-based railroad, will pay $100 a share for the remaining shares. The price marks a 32 percent premium on the company’s $76-a-share closing price Monday and is almost double what BNSF shares were selling for in March, when the price dipped to $51.20 a share.
BNSF Chairman, President and CEO Matthew K. Rose said the railroad’s leadership is “thrilled to have an opportunity to become a part of the Berkshire Hathaway family.”

But almost all of them admit there are so many variables that it's hard to say for sure.
One thing is clear from October sales. Base demand for new vehicles is slowly building.

The Economics of a Three-Race GOP Sweep

Against the backdrop of high unemployment and a public revolt against a Democratic health-care bill — which would significantly increase taxes, slash Medicare spending, and massively raise health-care spending elsewhere in a government takeover of our leading growth sector —a three-race sweep by Republicans is very much in play this Election Day.
The Intrade pay-to-play betting/investment parlor shows big wins for Bob McDonnell in Virginia and Doug Hoffman in upstate New York’s 23rd congressional district. The New Jersey race for governor is too close to call, with the probabilities swinging wildly. Late last night, Chris Christie’s victory probability was 56-46 over Jon Corzine, a 16-point gain for the Republican. This morning, Christie showed a 55 percent chance of victory, with Corzine at 47.

Con-Way Gives Dour View; Street Returns It

A day after Warren Buffett's historic wager on the freight industry, shares of the trucking company Con-Way fell as much as 10% on worse-than-expected results and wary statements from its CEO about the company's prospects for growth, at least in the near term.
After Tuesday's closing bell, Con-Way reported a third-quarter profit -- excluding the effects of accounting changes and "certain discrete tax items" -- of 39 cents a share. That still fell far short of the consensus analysts' earnings target of 52 cents
But it was Con-Way's chief executive, Douglas Stotlar, who dampened the mood even further with a gloomy outlook for the short-term business prospects of his company. "Overall, the business environment continues to present formidable challenges, characterized by weak demand, excess capacity and pricing pressure," Stotlar said in a written statement. S&P: Distressed Debt Exchanges May Not Boost Credit Profile

Convincing debt holders to swap holdings that are in danger of default for bonds of lesser value has become an increasingly attractive option for some hard-pressed companies. “As long as capital markets remain open, we believe that some issuers will consider this option,” according to Diane Vazza, managing director of Standard & Poor’s Global Fixed Income Research Group.
“Yet, it’s important to understand that, after a distressed debt exchange, many companies won’t necessarily present a stronger credit profile.,” she wrote in a Q&A on the speculative grade sector.
A distressed debt exchange might help some issuers ward off bankruptcy, but it could still leave them exposed to significant risk if the increasing liquidity within the system that has supported them so far were to dry up.

Trucking Spot Market Up 10 Percent in October

TransCore Freight Index jumps year-over-year, but dips from September

Freight volume in trucking’s spot market rose 10 percent in October, said TransCore, which reported the first year-over-year increase this year in the TransCore Freight Index.
But the sudden rise reflects the depth of the collapse last fall more than an economy recovering strength. The TFI declined 2.3 percent from September to October after rising 10.5 percent from August to September. ATA’s For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index in September showed a similar pattern, dipping 0.3 percent after increasing 1.2 percent in August and July. That could indicate an uneven road to recovery.
The index, which uses August 1996 as its base, hit its low point this year in February, at 239. Its highest point in the past four years was June 2006, when it hit 1215.

Shippers Appeal to NY, Newark on Harbor Truckers

Letter says change in federal law not needed as part of port clean trucks plans

A broad group of retailers and other shippers called on the mayors of New York and Newark, N.J., to withdraw their support for changes in federal law that would allow local regulators to bar independent owner-operators from harbor trucking.
The 29 organizations, including the National Retail Federation and the National Industrial Transportation League, said they had “grave disappointment” with support the mayors announced Oct. 19 for the effort led by the Port of Los Angeles, which has targeted independent operators as part of its effort to limit truck pollution at the port.
Writing to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Newark Mayor Cory Booker, the groups noted legal challenges to the Los Angeles regulations have been aimed only at provisions focused on economic regulation and not those touching on emissions and the environment

Heavy Truck Sales Surge in October

FTR Associates says price increases for 2010 models spurs recent sales

Heavy truck sales surged in October, rising 117 percent year-over-year and 104 percent from September, as freight volumes showed signs of improving and carriers began a last-minute round of truck purchasing before new emissions standards raise prices.
Preliminary data from FTR Associates shows Class 8 net orders for all major North American truck makers totaled 21,792 units in October. That led the vehicle market research firm to declare “the recovery has begun,” but to warn the truck manufacturing industry has a long, slow haul ahead, at least until the second half of 2010.
“All indications are that the October increase is due to filling up of remaining 2009 production slots for trucks with the older 2007 engine technology and to avoid the new 2010 engines, which due to tighter emissions standards will be more expensive and will employ new technology,” said Eric Starks, president of FTR Associates.

Quality Distribution Swings to Profit

Leaner, more efficient company remains cautious on economy

After losing $143.2 million in the second quarter, Quality returned to profit in the third quarter and improved upon last year’s third quarter profit.
The Tampa, Fla.-based bulk carrier earned net income of $1.4 million in the third quarter, compared with a profit of $717,000 a year earlier. Last year’s net was slashed by a $1.7 million restructuring charge. This year, Quality’s third quarter included a $300,000 pre-tax restructuring charge.
Revenue excluding fuel surcharge was down 13.5 percent year-over-year to $147.2 million, reflecting continued pressure from the current economic environment, the company said. But that figure was up approximately 7 percent from the second quarter.

Former SmartWay Head Kicks Off a New Venture in Truck Aerodynamics

There have been many contributions to the improvement of truck and trailer aerodynamics - and therefore fuel efficiency - over the last few years, both from truck manufacturers and from add-on devices. Many of these advanced technologies are approved by the Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay program, including ATDynamics' TrailerTail, Windyne's Flex Fairing and Carrier Transicold's Freight Wing Belly Fairing.
However, current advances have not fully captured the imagination of the trucking industry, and there is still room for improvement, says Mitch Greenberg. And who better to take truck aerodynamics to the next level but Greenberg himself, who resigned as head of the EPA's SmartWay program a few months ago.

Stocks End Mixed as Post-Fed Rally Fizzles

Stocks ended mixed Wednesday as a post-Fed rally fizzled. Stocks had opened higher as investors cheered some encouraging readings on the economy, then swung in about a 50 point range after the Fed's statement, before finishing narrowly mixed.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 30.23, or 0.3 percent, to close at 9,802.14, after being up more than 130 points earlier. The S&P 500 rose 0.1 percent, while the Nasdaq shed about 0.1 percent.

Fed to Maintain Low Rates Even as Economy Recovers

The U.S. Federal Reserve Wednesday expressed growing confidence that an economic recovery was building, even though it stuck to its commitment to keep borrowing costs near zero for "an extended period."
As expected, the Fed kept its benchmark federal funds rate unchanged in a range of zero to 0.25 percent, and said the economy had "continued to pick up" since its last policy-setting meeting in September.
In its closely watched policy statement, the Fed said household spending "appears to be expanding but remains constrained by ongoing job losses, sluggish income growth, lower housing wealth, and tight credit."
That was somewhat more upbeat than September's statement, which referred to spending as "stabilizing."

Why the Dollar's Decline Doesn't Worry US Officials—Yet

While US officials publicly support a strong dollar, in private they don't appear so worried about its recent slide.
I've had a chance to speak with several senior US and foreign financial officials over the past several days about the dollar's decline.
Though they work in different branches of government, their commentary has been pretty similar: They do watch the dollar carefully but they see its decline so far as orderly and not yet an inflationary threat.

Nervous About US Stocks? Check Out Emerging Markets

As more nervousness creeps into the US stock market, investors are sharpening their look at overseas opportunities where growth is outpacing the US recovery.
While emerging and developed markets have largely kept pace with the US rally over the past seven months, there's growing belief that the two may diverge as the US faces an extended slow-growth period.
Consequently, advisors are making sure their clients are committing at least 20 percent of their portfolios to foreign markets, with about a quarter of that devoted to emerging markets.

Do You Buy Marchionne's Turnaround Plan?

As I sit through a lengthy explanation of how Sergio Marchionne plans to turn around a struggling Chrysler, one question keeps running through my mind: Do we think this plan will work?
There are many aspects of the strategy that make complete sense on paper.
* Chrysler will share platforms with Fiat and by 2014 reduce 11 platforms to 7. A huge cost savings.
* Using a Fiat platform, Dodge will introduce a small car by 2013. That's in addition to Dodge adding a compact sedan in 2012 and a model to replace the Avenger in 2013. Dodge desperately needs new, smaller, fuel-efficient models.
* Jeep will be adding a small SUV in 2013 as well as two other new models that year. Jeep, which currently builds just fewer than 500,000 vehicles, is targeting a major increase in production to 800,000 vehicles by 2014.

Stocks and Voters Show GOP the Way

Stocks loved last night’s election returns.
President Obama and Nancy Pelosi got their ears pounded back over big spending, taxes, the health-care takeover, cap-and-trade, and well, the fact that government is getting too darned big under this crowd in Washington.
The health-care insurance companies roared right up from the open.
Investors are making a bet that the government-insurance option is in even bigger trouble after last night’s Republican victories. A Wall Street Journal news story also suggests that the big health-care bill won’t get done this year, and that it will be pushed into next year’s midterm calendar. Blue Dogs everywhere (and especially in Virginia) can read the election returns as accurately as any pundit. And they are not going to vote to jack up taxes, slash Medicare, and launch even more government spending and deficits.

Con-way Says Used ‘Aggressive’ Pricing

Discounting seen as diluting benefits of additional tonnage gains

Less-than-truckload carrier Con-way says it moved toward "more aggressive" price discounting in the third quarter than it normally uses and started hiring back workers to cope with tonnage gains.
The declining yields and rising costs cut in the benefits of a 5.1 percent gain in tonnage in the third quarter over the same period a year ago.
Con-way Freight reported a sequential 11.9 percent increase in daily tonnage from the second quarter, along with the improvement over last year.
The nation’s third-largest LTL carrier — which went through layoffs and salary and wage cuts early this year — said it brought back an unspecified number of workers to keep up with the sudden surge in demand. It also plans to restore about $25 million in wage and salary cuts by January.
Revenue at Con-way Freight dropped 14.1 percent from a year ago, operating income decreased 62.7 percent and yield was down 10.5 percent, excluding fuel surcharges. Including fuel surcharges, revenue per hundredweight was down 19.4 percent, a steeper decline than was seen at ABF Freight System, FedEx Freight or YRC.
“Profitability was diminished from lower pricing driven by overcapacity in the LTL market, and higher variable operating costs due to increased tonnage levels,” the company said in its Security and Exchange Commission filing.

UPS, Boys & Girls Clubs of America Unveil New Paint Scheme for David Ragan's No. 6 Ford Fusion

New Design Reflects UPS Safe Driving Program Available to Local Boys & Girls Club Teens

NASCAR driver David Ragan and the UPS (NYSE:UPS - News) team will have an extra 4.5 million fans cheering them this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway when Ragan gets behind the wheel of his No. 6 Ford Fusion, which will sport a new paint scheme that reflects UPS and Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s (BGCA) UPS Road Code safe driving program.
The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS, introduced a national program this year in collaboration with BGCA to teach the company’s industry-leading safe driving techniques to teens. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, but UPS and its world-renowned drivers are making an effort to change that with the help of BGCA and Ragan.

Hunt, NS Ink Intermodal Deal

Trucking and intermodal shipment operator J. B. Hunt Transport Services will ship goods through Norfolk Southern Railway under a far-reaching, multi-year contract agreement between the two transportation giants.
Hunt said the accord “will further establish the parties as the leading providers of transcontinental and local intermodal service in the eastern half of the United States.”
Hunt already has a long-term contract with BNSF Railway in the West, and is the largest box customer for that largest of intermodal railroads.
Once known strictly as a truckload carrier, J.B. Hunt now gets the largest share of its revenue and operating profit from intermodal operations. Its intermodal business segment counted $456 million in revenue in the third quarter ending Sept. 30, more than half the $834 million in revenue the company reported.

Deutsche Post DHL Lost $123 Million

Express unit earns profit after restructuring charges; forecast improves

Deutsche Post DHL lost $123 million in the third quarter, reflecting costs involved in DHL's exit from the U.S. domestic parcel delivery market and the bankruptcy of a major customer, German retailer Arcandor.
Revenue fell 18.6 percent to $16.5 billion, and third quarter operating income fell to $340 million from $1.4 billion a year ago.
Those results beat expectations and allowed the world's biggest logistics company to raise its profit forecast for the full year. The German mail and express delivery group said it now expects earnings before interest and tax to reach at least $2 billion this year against a previously forecast $1.76 billion as cost cuts counter slumping cargo volume.

Fleets Aren't Keen on Buying Equipment in 4Q

CK Commercial Vehicle Research's fourth quarter Fleet Sentiment Report indicates that equipment buying is expected to drop in the next three months, despite higher readings in the last few quarters. The Fleet Equipment Buying Index fell 23 percent from the previous quarter, a reflection of the low numbers of respondents with plans to place orders for new trailers.
The research returned the smallest percentage of fleets with plans to buy trailers in the fourth quarter than any other period in the six years CKCVR has collected the data. Twenty-one percent of those surveyed has plans to purchase trailers in the next three months, according to the report.
The index is a simple measure of planned buying behavior of for-hire, private and government fleets over the next three months. A lower reading indicates that fewer fleets are planning to purchase equipment while a higher reading indicates that more are planning to purchase equipment.

Wabash National’s 3Q Operating Loss Narrows

Trailer manufacturer Wabash National Corp. said its third-quarter loss widened but its operating loss declined from the same quarter last year.
The company lost $66.4 million, or $2.23 cents a share, in the third quarter, compared with a loss of $4.3 million, or 15 cents, in last year’s third quarter.
“Total manufacturing inventories appear to be bottoming and both tonnage and net trailer orders are incrementally increasing,” he said in a statement. “While the operating environment will likely remain challenging for the near-term, we believe the worst is now behind us.”

Dow Ends Above 10,000; Cisco Boosts Techs

Stocks rallied Thursday after a strong reading on productivity and an easing in jobless claims — an encouraging sign ahead of tomorrow's jobs report.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average shot up 203.82, or 2.1 percent, to close at 10,005.96 — the first time the index has finished above 10,000 since Oct. 22. All 30 Dow stocks finished higher.
Techs were among the best performers after Cisco posted strong results after the bell Wednesday.

Cashin noted that the jobless claims number of 512,000 was "better than some rumors late yesterday" — rumors which he says dragged markets down before the close.
But he's refraining from popping champagne corks "as long as [claims] stay above 500,000. They're not going to start hiring until they stop firing."

This Bear-Market Rally Has 'Turned': Elliot Wave Analyst

Markets opened higher on Thursday as a strong reading on productivity and an easing in jobless claims helped cheer investors. Will stocks continue to rise from this point? Steve Hochberg, chief market analyst at Elliott Wave International, shared his market outlook.
“This has been a bear-market rally,” Hochberg told CNBC.
“It’s been a great rally in terms of percentage gain over a short period of time, but everything we look at in terms of the internals of the market suggests that it’s just a bear-market rally.”
Hochberg said the number of advancing shares versus declining shares has been “contracting on the way up” and the advancing volume on the NYSE has been in a “typical bear market profile”—contracting as the rally extended.

Boomers in Denial About Retirement Savings

No doubt last year’s financial crisis dealt a body blow to many investors, but many Boomers approaching retirement have yet to turn their reaction to last year’s events into action.
Perhaps even more startling is the extent to which their savings are falling short of their goals. On average, these pre-retirees expected they would need $800,000 to fund their retirement. However, most had only saved about $300,000.

Inflatable Seat Belts Aimed At Second Row Safety

After 10 years of research and development, Ford is unveiling inflatable seat belts.
This is a potentially ground breaking innovation in safety aimed at better protecting people in the second and third rows of cars involved in accidents.
Inflatable seat belts, before they've been deployed, look like padded regular seat belts. When there is an accident, the belts open up and in less than 2 tenths of a second an air bag inflates, diffusing pressure on the chest as the passenger is thrown forward in a crash.

A Short-Sighted Cheer for Easy Money

Wall Street loves easy money. That’s what I conclude from today’s 200-point stock market rally, which started early and gathered force, pushing the Dow back over 10,000 at the close of trading.
Oddly enough, stocks roared at yesterday’s opening by nearly 150 points, a response to the GOP sweep in New Jersey and Virginia. The government’s health-insurance takeover plan looks dead after the elections. Nancy Pelosi is walking off a cliff with her Saturday vote in the House. I don’t think she’s got the numbers. Post-election, Blue Dog Democrats are going to have a hard time voting for big tax hikes, big spending, big government, and a $500 billion Medicare cut. Independents, seniors, and affluent suburbanites all moved to the GOP column on Tuesday, a negative referendum on the Democrats’ big-government scheme.

TWC chair: Congress should focus on jobs

Tom Pauken, chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission, called on Congress to refocus its attention on stemming job losses in light of escalating national unemployment rates, which have reached 10.2 percent.
Pauken said in a statement issued Friday he would like Congress to focus on passing legislation that encourages job creation and capital investment in the private sector, specifically with small businesses.
Pauken supported legislation suggested by FedEx Chairman Fred Smith that would allow companies that make capital investments in the United States to expense those investments in a one-year period during times of high unemployment. He also suggested that Congress reinstate an investment-tax credit law repealed in 1986 that allows for accelerated depreciation for capital investments in the United States.

Senate Confirms Ferro as FMCSA Chief

Former trucking association leader to take on driver hours, highway safety

The U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed Anne S. Ferro as Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrator yesterday, putting a former trucking association executive in charge of the nation’s truck safety watchdog at the Department of Transportation.
She takes charge at FMCSA as it reopens its rulemaking on truck driver hours of service, one of the most contentious issues facing the agency.
When nominated by President Obama in June, Ferro was president of the Maryland Motor Truck Association. Before joining the MMTA in 2003, she spent 11 years with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration, first as assistant administrator and then administrator.
Her nomination outraged the Teamsters union and several public safety groups opposed to changes in the hours-of-service rules that Ferro supported as head of the MMTA.

U.S. Sheds Transport Jobs in October

National unemployment rate of 10.2 percent affects freight sector

Freight transportation employment fell again in October, the Labor Department said, and many of their major customer groups shed jobs as well.
Measured by the raw numbers supplied by employers, without adjusting for typical seasonal variations, Labor said the trucking industry lost 8,700 jobs last month. That left the largest transportation industry segment with about 1.27 million workers, down from 1.279 million in September and nearly 1.284 million in August.
The report showed another month of sizable declines in the goods-producing sector, with the manufacturing and construction sectors each shedding more than 60,000 adjusted for seasonal norms. Those are customer groups that generate large amounts of freight shipments, and traffic for their cargoes has recently held to a narrow volume range after growing over the summer.

Amid Driver Appreciation Week, Dupre Highlights Hourly Pay Structure

While most trucking companies prefer to pay their drivers by the mile, Dupre Logistics has been taking a different approach, compensating by the hour. In light of National Driver Appreciation Week, the company decided to highlight its hourly pay structure and celebrate the initiative's benefits to its 700-plus drivers as well as the company as a whole.
Not many fleets have committed to this type of pay structure, especially in this economy, but the Louisiana-based carrier is finding that the alternative method is paying off in terms of retention, safety and efficiency. The pay structure produces better schedules and safer drivers, the company says. It also attracts higher quality drivers that want to stay, something that may give Dupre a leg up once the recovery shakes out.
"We need the high caliber driver," said Tom Voelkel, president. "At Dupre Logistics, we strive to recruit and retain the best team in the industry. It's an initiative with benefits that far outweigh the cost to our bottom line."

Dow Gains 3% for the Week, Led by GE

Stocks eked out a gain Friday after a rocky session as investors juggled a disappointing jobs report and some analyst upgrades.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 17.46, or 0.2 percent, to close at 10,023.42. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each gained about 0.3 percent.
The gains for the week were far more impressive: All three indexes are up at least 3.2 percent from where they ended last week, snapping a two-week losing streak. And the CBOE volatility index, widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, dropped more than 20 percent, finishing the week below 25.

Outlook: Dollar Likely to Ride Higher on Bleak Jobs Report

The dollar is likely to trade higher in the week ahead, with Friday's worse-than-expected U.S. non-farm payrolls data for October seen as the driving force for currency markets at least until mid week.
The dollar eked out a gain against most major currencies other than the yen after the government said the unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent, the highest since April 1983.

How Fed Will Trigger Correction: Market Pro

Friday's Labor Department report showed that unemployment rate unexpectedly jumped to 10.2 percent in October, even though the pace of job losses slowed. How do the numbers affect the markets? David Joy, chief market strategist at RiverSource Investments, and Keith Goddard, president of Capital Advisors, shared their insights.
“I read it as a relatively constructive number, because the trend continues to improve and the headline number will keep consumer confidence under pressure,” Joy told CNBC.
Joy said he expects businesses to lead the global recovery instead of consumers. He added that, according to the Fed statement from earlier this week, it will take a "long time" to get into an inflationary period.

“So I think the Fed is on hold, as they said, for an extended period of time," he said. "I think that means well into next year if not beyond.”

Correction Coming in this 70s Retro Rally: Charts

The current market rally will stop in the next few days, a correction of at least 3 weeks will follow, but stocks will rebound and finish high in 2010, independent trader Bill McLaren said Friday.
Once this correction has finished, it “will be followed by a strong trend up to complete in 2010 for a significant top,” Mclaren told CNBC.
The current recovery outlook for the S&P 500 index mirrors that of the Dow in 1975, McLaren said, adding that the “index has been following this roadmap very well.”
The crisis of ’75 was “the last time that there was a dominate five-year bear cycle which we’re in right now,” he said, adding that “we can expect the same type of trend that occurred in '75-'78 to occur from now to 2012.”

Fears that the meteoric rise in stocks and commodities prices is creating another asset bubble have investors debating whether to pull back now or ride the rally until the bubble bursts next year when the Fed starts raising interest rates.
Warnings about another asset bubble—which have become more pronounced recently from economist Nouriel Roubini as well as others—stem from concern that the market's continued rally is not the result of an improving economy but the Fed's low interest rates, which make dollar-denominated assets cheaper.
"The thing that's super-difficult to gauge is how much longer will these assets all keep rising in tandem. It's virtually impossible to gauge but it could end up surprising people and go longer than people think," says Chip Hanlon, president of Delta Global Advisors in Huntington Beach, Calif.

Jobless Rate Jumps to 10.2% as Labor Market Still Weak

The U.S. unemployment rate unexpectedly jumped to 10.2 percent in October, breaching the politically sensitive double-digit barrier for the first time in 26-1/2 years, even though the pace of job losses slowed.
A Labor Department report showed on Friday that employers cut 190,000 jobs last month, more than the 175,000 markets had expected. Economists had looked for the jobless rate to rise to only 9.9 percent from 9.8 percent the prior month.
"The unemployment rate of 10.2 percent is problematic because it gives a sense of urgency to Washington, D.C. Washington will be looking for any increase in stimulus," said Tom Sowanick, co-president and chief investment officer at Omnivest Group.

What The Street Thinks of The Jobless Report

S&P Futures dropped about 10 points as the October Unemployment rate hit 10.2 percent, the highest since April 1983.
While this will be the headline in the papers, bear in mind that unemployment in the 1982 recession peaked at 10.8 percent at the end of 1982.
October Nonfarm Payrolls were also worse than expected, with a loss of 190,000 jobs vs. expectations of a loss of 175,000. There were revisions UPWARD in August and September.

BNSF CEO: Buffett's Bid for Railroad "Warmly Received" In Washington

Burlington Northern Santa Fe CEO Matt Rose says the railroad's proposed acquisition by Berkshire Hathaway is being "very warmly received" by Washington policy makers.
Rose makes the comment in a voice message to BNSF employees posted today on the company's intranet. A transcription has been filed with the SEC.
"All I can tell you is, 'Wow, what a difference it makes.' This transaction is really being very warmly received. And the reason is exactly what we told all of our employees on Tuesday, and that is that Berkshire has a tremendous track record of buying well-run, well-maintained companies and leaving them alone in order for them to fulfill their mission. And it also helps to have, as I described it on Tuesday, probably the most significant business icon, Warren Buffett, leading this effort."

FedEx Express to boost hybrid fleet by 51 trucks

FedEx Express will purchase 51 gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles from Azure Dynamics Corp.
The vehicles will be delivered in November and December; most of those will be put into service at a Bronx, N.Y., station. That station will have an all-hybrid fleet of about 100 trucks.
This will bring FedEx Express’ fleet of hybrid electric and electric vehicles to 325.
“The tough driving and delivery conditions of New York City, mainly the stop-and-go-traffic, is an ideal environment to prove that efficient and cleaner transportation technologies are a viable alternative to conventionally equipped trucks,” Mitch Jackson, FedEx Corp. director of environmental affairs and sustainability, said in a statement.

YRC Worldwide starts debt exchange; failure could mean bankruptcy

YRC Worldwide Inc. has started its debt-for-equity exchange offer, a vital step in the company’s turnaround plan that, if unsuccessful, could end in bankruptcy.
If successful, the exchange — which would trade about $536.8 million in debt for what could be 95 percent of YRC’s common shares — promises Overland Park-based YRC a more firm financial footing. The proposal followed “several months of ongoing, active dialogue with representatives of the noteholders,” YRC said in a Monday release.
If the exchange fails, YRC would talk to stakeholders about other ways to restructure outside court, including potential amendments to the exchange offer, YRC said in a Monday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. If such efforts still fell short, it would file bankruptcy, probably with a plan prepared in advance, the filing said.

FTR: We're on the Bottom, But Where Do We Go From Here?

"We really have reached a bottom, and that's a good thing." "We think the economy is starting to improve." These are just a few of the promising phrases listeners heard from Eric Starks, president of FTR Associates, and Economist Bill Witte, respectively, during an FTR webinar Friday morning. The forecasters presented the good news in their Commercial Truck and Vehicle Outlook.
But, as with most good news that comes from FTR, it almost always comes with a caveat: there's no free lunch. Starks explained that there's still a lot of uncertainty about how long it will take for things to firm up. At a minimum, things won't start firming up until the third quarter of 2010, he predicts.

Time Is Here to Look at Overseas Stocks: Bill Gross

Middle-aged investors looking to retire in about 20 years should position their portfolios to have a 25 to 30 percent stake in equities outside of the United States, Bill Gross, co-chief investment officer at PIMCO told CNBC Monday.
"Stocks or equity investments are better made in strong growth economies—that's not the US," Gross said. "You go where the growth is, and today, that would be in developing markets such as Brazil or Asia."
The US stock market is likely the most overvalued global market, Gross said, pointing out that it has a higher P/E ratio than the United Kingdom or Brazilian markets, but a lower yield. Ten-year bonds in those two countries also far outyield those in the United States, he said.

Flaw in US Data Overstates Growth, Productivity

A widening gap between data and reality is distorting the government’s picture of the country’s economic health, overstating growth and productivity in ways that could affect the political debate on issues like trade, wages and job creation.
The fundamental shortcoming is in the way imports are accounted for. A carburetor bought for $50 in China as a component of an American-made car, for example, more often than not shows up in the statistics as if it were the American-made version valued at, say, $100. The failure to distinguish adequately between what is made in America and what is made abroad falsely inflates the gross domestic product, which sums up all value added within the country.

Will Chrysler Return to Class 8 Trucks? Link with Fiat's Iveco Might Make It So

Will Chrysler return to the Class 8 market that it left 34 years ago? Fred Diaz, CEO of Chrysler LLC's Dodge Ram Truck, said his group will explore expansion into heavy trucks while it adds Euro-style cargo vans and a new American light pickup. They'll all be called Rams but not overtly Dodge Rams because the Ram name has gained near-stand-alone brand status within Chrysler.
However, for Australia Iveco also makes a heavy conventional model called the Powerstar, which could find acceptance in North America. Powerstar comes in day- and sleeper-cab versions, with big-bore diesels rated at 450 to 560 horsepower, and with transmissions that include a 16-speed automated mechanical gearbox (more details are at Iveco heavy commercial vehicles: Powerstar). Like most other diesels overseas, Iveco's Curser engines will use selective catalytic reduction to meet the latest Euro exhaust emissions limits, and would presumably do so to meet EPA limits in the U.S. and Canada.

US Recovery to be Weak, Erratic: Top Fed Officials

High unemployment and reluctant consumers will likely make an incipient U.S. economic recovery weak and erratic, top Federal Reserve officials said in a string of speeches across the country on Tuesday.
That means interest rates, currently at historic lows close to zero, should remain near that floor for the foreseeable future, the policymakers said.
"The strength and durability of the expansion is in question," said Janet Yellen president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, in Phoenix, Arizona. "High unemployment, weak job growth and paltry wage increases are a recipe for sluggish consumer spending growth and a tepid recovery."

Chrysler Makes Smart Call Staying Unplugged—For Now

Ever since Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and his management team unveiled their plan for reviving Chrysler last week, much has been made about what the plan is and is not built around: A heavy emphasis on four cylinder engines and very little mention of hybrids and electric cars.
Also, for all the hype about electric cars coming, they will be here in limited numbers at first. A combination of limited capacity to supply batteries and components along with the usual slow uptake on new technology will limit electric car sales when they first roll out. Heck, look at gas-electric hybrids. After almost a decade of being sold, they still make up less than 3 % of auto sales.

You’ll Laugh, You’ll Cry At UPS Outlook

United Parcel Service (UPS) has gotten some love on Wall Street for its forecast for business conditions in coming quarters, including the impending holiday season.
Shares have risen 3%, and gotten back within spitting distance of the highs reached two months ago at just shy of $60 a share, after offering some constructive comments about business conditions. Or, at least, comments that sounded constructive.
Still, there seemed to be a lot of ”yes, with a ’but’ ….” or ”no, with a ‘maybe’ ….” to the company’s remarks. Which included its belief that the recovery was real. But gradual. And sustainable. But vulnerable.

IRS Drops Last FedEx Audit

Decision is major victory for independent contractor model at parcel unit

FedEx says it expects no more audits from the Internal Revenue Service now that the agency for the second time dropped a look at potential penalties in the company’s classification of parcel division drivers as independent contractors.
The IRS, which last month told FedEx it will not impose penalties under an audit for 2002, this week said it also rejected assessments for the years 2004 through 2006.
It’s a major victory for FedEx because the classification of the drivers as independent contractors is a central pillar of the business model at its ground delivery operation, which competes directly with UPS and its unionized parcel delivery work force.
“FedEx Ground’s independent contractor model has been tremendously successful for our customers, the hard-working independent contractors and FedEx Ground for more than 20 years,” the company said. “It is clear that the IRS decision today further validates this business model and we look forward to continue growing the model for many decades to come.”

Reducing Trucking’s Carbon Footprint

As much as I’d like it to be otherwise, for the foreseeable future, the trucking industry will continue to be virtually 100% dependent on fossil fuels for energy to power our fleets. As such, the industry will remain for some time a significant source of carbon emissions.
We did this in 2008 for both our less-than-truckload and full-truckload operations at Con-way. In our LTL operations, which run both in cities and between them, we turned back the throttle governors of our trucks to run at a maximum speed of 62 mph, down from 65. In our truckload operation, which runs mostly long-haul highway miles across the nation, we turned back their speed governors to 65 mph from 70 mph.
In the process, we made a couple of discoveries. We saved fuel, to the tune of 6.6 million gallons annually, and saw a roughly 3% to 5% improvement in fuel mileage. We lowered annual emissions of CO2 produced by our fleets, reducing them by 942 million tons over previous levels. The change didn’t impact on-time service since on an average run of 500 miles, the speed reduction in our LTL operations added about 25 minutes to the run time.

Trucker Werner to Pay Shareholders $90 Million

Special dividend reflects ‘firming’ freight trends, analyst says

At a time when many trucking companies are hard up for cash, Werner Enterprises says it will deliver $90 million in special dividends to shareholders next month.
It’s the second consecutive year Werner, a $2.2 billion carrier, will pay a special cash dividend to shareholders, in addition to its regular quarterly dividend of 5 cents per share.
The special dividend of $1.25 per share will be paid to holders of approximately 72 million shares Dec. 8, the company said. Analysts said the move is a good sign.
“This special dividend is not a surprise,” said R.W. Baird analyst Jon A. Langenfeld. “We view it as an indication of solid 2010 free cash flow expectations on a lower capital expenditure outlook and a confirmation of a firming in freight trends.”

Dow Rises for a Sixth Straight Session

The Dow rose for a sixth straight session Wednesday as the dollar hit a new 15-month low after Federal Reserve officials reinforced the view that rates will remain low for some time.
The dollar rebounded by the close but stocks held onto their gains. Also giving the market a boost was strong Chinese data on factory output and retail sales.

Yuan Critics Want Obama to Keep Campaign Promise

U.S. critics of China's currency policy said on Wednesday they were skeptical of a hint from Beijing that it could soon let its yuan rise against the dollar again after an 18-month hiatus.
The critics, representing U.S. business and labor groups, also urged President Barack Obama to live up to his campaign promise last year, when he said he would "insist that China stop manipulating its currency because it's not fair to American manufacturers, it's not fair to you and we are going to change it when I am president of the United States of America."

Wal-Mart To Continue Retail Success: Analysts

"I think value is going to be in vogue for some time," said Binder. "And while other retailers are showing somewhat better results, I think that if you look out over the next few years, you are still going to see a very valued consumer and that's Wal-Mar'ts sweet spot. Dollar Trouble, Oil's Bubble Could Derail Recovery

The weakness in the U.S. dollar risks inflating a bubble in the oil market, which could threaten consumer spending and potentially cause a double dip recession.
The greenback's decline this year has been lauded as good for America as it benefits earnings, stimulates exports and helps rebalance the U.S. economy. But runaway oil prices could be the Achilles' heel to the thesis that sees only a benign impact of a weak dollar.

It stole the show at last year's auto show. Now the Cadillac Converj is getting the green light from General Motors. Addicted to Easy Money?

In an interview with CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo yesterday, Richmond Fed president Jeffrey Lacker refused to offer any clear sign as to when the central bank might finally end its zero-bound policy and begin raising rates. When asked whether he was worried about future inflation, Lacker said he thinks “we’re in a good place with inflation right now.” And when asked whether the U.S. would move to lift rates in 2010, he said, “It could take longer than that.”
Look, I would have asked Lacker if the Fed will tighten policy in my lifetime. He wouldn’t even commit to 2010.

Freight Transportation Slowed in September

Freight TSI index drops 0.5 percent after three consecutive gains

The output of the freight transportation industry declined 0.5 percent in September from August, blunting a three-month long recovery, according to a report Thursday from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
The agency’s Freight Transportation Services Index, which includes data from for-hire trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight, fell to 95.7, the lowest level for September since September 1996 when it was 87.7.
The Freight TSI has now declined in 10 of the past 14 months and in five of the nine months in 2009 despite the three consecutive monthly increases that began in June, BTS said. It had increased 2.8 percent between May and August.

They said state agencies this week reported they had approved 10,041 projects for funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Most stimulus projects aided by the Department of Transportation go to highways and bridges, initially for quick-start repairs and resurfacing but increasingly for more lengthy construction including new lanes or bridge structures.

Transport CFOs Pessimistic on Recovery, Hiring

Only 22 percent expect to add to payroll in next six months, survey finds

Financial executives at transportation companies are more pessimistic about the economy than their counterparts in other businesses, and few plan to hire workers in the next six months, according to a survey by research firm Grant Thornton.
Even fewer expect their headcounts to decrease in the next six months, reflecting sweeping cuts that have already been made at transporters from ocean shipping lines to trucking companies over the past year.
Only 22 percent of the transportation executives interviewed by the research firm said they will increase hiring in the next six months, compared with 24 percent for all businesses included in the survey. But only 16 percent of the transportation executives said they expect to reduce payroll in that period, compared with 22 percent overall.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average looks set to stage a steady climb to 11,600 points, but it won't get there before Christmas, Daryl Guppy, CEO of Guppytraders.com, told CNBC Thursday.
"A move above 10,000 (points), which is the strongest historical resistance level in the Dow, sets us an upside target of 11,600. Now it doesn't mean we're going to get there by Christmas … but we will move steadily towards that level while that trend level remains as a solid support line," Guppy said.

"Keep your seat belt fastened. It's Friday the 13th. We've had a bit of a failure in risk but it could be bounding back," Dolan said. Job Market Politics to Keep Interest Rates Low

Ugly U.S. unemployment data and Republican Party political momentum could set the stage for a Federal Reserve next year that leans more toward putting workers back on the job rather than scaring off inflation.
With the U.S. unemployment rate at a 26-1/2 year high of 10.2 percent and likely heading higher, the dismal state of the jobs market could punish the Democrats who control Congress in mid-term elections next November, raising the possibility Obama may want to shape the board with politics in mind.

Despite Rhetoric, Obama Has Limited Options To Boost Jobs

Barack Obama rode an economic crisis into the White House in November 2008. Now he’ll have to ride out the last of that economic storm if he’s to keep his own job in three years.
But with unemployment surging and the President’s poll ratings sinking, there’s growing debate about what—if anything—the President can do about the situation.
Nevertheless, the President is facing his greatest test to date and how he handles it depends on a complicated mix of economic, political and personal considerations as well as how much faith he is willing to place in historical precedence.

In the auto world, everyone is searching for the "Big Mo" - momentum. It's elusive and some of the best-laid plans rarely wind up producing it.
But for three companies, the latest report from Kelley Blue Book shows Audi, Ford and Hyundai are generating more interest with potential buyers.
Audi has been getting plenty of praise for its Q5 and Q7 models. And rightfully so. Those in the market for a luxury SUV/CUV are increasingly realizing Audi is worth checking out. In Fact, KBB says the percentage of potential SUV/CUV buyers looking at Audi has more than doubled.

The Congressional Assault on Fed Independence

Investors and political analysts should keep a sharp eye on the congressional assault on Federal Reserve independence.
This is a transparent effort by members of Congress to use the financial-reregulation bills as a means of applying political leverage to stop the Fed from any 2010 midterm-election-year exit strategies that might raise the federal funds target rate, stop the purchases of mortgage-backed bonds, and drain cash from the economy.
The Chris Dodd bill unveiled this week spells it all out. The White House would appoint the chairmen of the regional Federal Reserve banks (New York, Dallas, Richmond, etc.), subject to confirmation by the Senate. In addition, the Federal Reserve Board in Washington would appoint all the directors of these regional Fed banks. Right now, the local member banks appoint two-thirds of the directors, with the remaining one-third appointed by the Fed board in Washington.

Truckload Rates Fell 9.4 Percent, Carrier Says

Price reductions matched capacity cuts for truckload carrier Covenant

Average truckload rates fell 9.4 percent in the third quarter despite sharp cuts in capacity compared to last year, carrier Covenant Transport said in a securities filing.
The Tennessee-based carrier in its formal filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission on the quarter said the rate decline compared to the same period a year ago came even though Covenant matched the rate decline with a 9.4 percent reduction in average tractor count.
But what it called the “lackluster freight environment” for shipping cut deeply into pricing, which reduced overall freight revenue 18.2 percent, a major reason Covenant reported a $13.6 million net loss in the quarter.

Software Cuts Central Freight Costs

Improved visibility saves time, miles for drivers

Central Freight Lines is using a product from Cheetah Software Services to provide their dispatchers with information that helps cut costs by saving their drivers time and mileage.
Cheetah Freight is a software package that provides real-time pickup and delivery status information that was previously unavailable. Dispatchers can now make decisions more efficiently, on the fly, regarding the best drivers to handle on-demand pickups. Central Freight can use the program to gather information on pickup and delivery status and integrate it into their backend systems for immediate processing, rather than waiting until the end of the day.
“After only six months or so, Cheetah has already helped us accomplish the 3 to 5 percent increase in productivity and the 5 to 10 percent reduction in miles per stop that we hoped to achieve with the solution. But our return on investment has gone far beyond what we anticipated,” said Mark Stein, Central Freight’s director of operations. “Even more important, we’ve been able to remotely dispatch multiple locations from a single location. We’ve been able to consolidate management teams and more efficiently manage the business. And, we’ve been able to provide better customer service by centralizing our customer service function.”

LA Spending on Port Truck Dispute Exceeds $1 Million

Attorney says effort from courts to Congress may go on for several years

The city of Los Angeles has spent more than $1 million in lobbying and litigation to defend the port’s clean truck concession requirements, according to a Southern California attorney.
The litigation so far involves more than 10,000 pages of legal documents, including 219 filings in federal court in Los Angeles and more than 130 filings with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, where the courts have rejected city arguments and said the concession requirements are a violation of federal law, attorney Cameron Roberts said.
Also, the city and port have a contract with the Gephardt Group, a high-profile Washington lobbying firm, to urge Congress to draw new limits on federal oversight of interstate commerce and give ports limited regulatory authority over harbor trucking.
Los Angeles, in litigation filed by the American Trucking Associations, is defending the clean truck plan’s concession agreements with motor carriers, including a requirement that allows only for employee drivers of trucking companies to operate at the port.

Art Cashin: Why Markets Face Huge 1-Day Swings

The U.S. dollar rose on Thursday as policymakers around the world warned the economic recovery was fragile, prompting investors to take profits on gains in higher-yielding currencies and assets.
“The dollar remains a heavy influence,” Cashin told CNBC.
“It isn’t as dominant as it was two or three weeks ago, but my great concern has been that if some kind of geopolitical event popped up…and people started to race to the dollar in a flight to safety, then you can get the markets moving in enormous amounts in a matter of a day or so. And that’s a bother to me.”

Investors Cut Back US Stocks for Bigger Growth Abroad

Even as the US market continues to rally, many institutional investors are trimming their US holdings and putting more money in foreign stocks—especially those in emerging markets.
Expectations that the US economy faces slow growth in the years ahead—which likely means tepid gains for domestic stocks—have prompted more investors to look abroad for better growth opportunities.

Strategists Say Markets Have More Upside — But How Much?

The stock market clawed higher on Friday while the dollar moved lower and gold prices continued to rise. What should investors expect from the markets going forward?
“We’re cautious—we’re telling clients not to chase stocks at these levels,” Shelton told CNBC.
“Sure, they can move a little bit higher, but risks are high, so you’ve got to do some things that protect the portfolio, you need to hedge it a little bit.”
“From a long-term investment standpoint, you’ve got to like the emerging markets,” he said. “Near-term, we’re a little concerned because we’ve seen this huge rally off the bottom. But there are better growth prospects abroad.”

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn could not have been any clearer about how many people will buy electric vehicles 10 years from now.
"I'm betting 10% of the global buyers will make a rational decision on what to drive. And I think I'm being conservative at 10%," said Mr. Ghosn. He made that prediction while discussing Nissan's future over dinner Thursday night.

The package-delivery giant is set to serve up outsized earnings in the next economic upcycle, due in part to its growing global presence. Video: FedEx – Good for the Long Haul

FEDEX SHARES HAVE MORE THAN doubled since closing at 34.28 on March 9, handily outpacing the Standard & Poor's 500 Index, as investors poured into cyclical stocks likely to rebound early in an economic upturn.
Although the global economy remains shaky, FedEx has upside for the long haul. It has a growing footprint in big overseas markets like China, enough operating leverage to boost earnings when volumes ramp up, and solid growth at its very profitable FedEx Ground unit. In fact, FedEx and its main rival, United Parcel Service, "are likely to become a global duopoly, and both companies have nearly insurmountable barriers to entry," says Keith Schoonmaker, a senior stock analyst at Morningstar.
When the economy recovers, "FedEx will be in an even better position than it has been in the past," says Rob Pickels, a senior analyst at asset manager Manning & Napier, which owns FedEx shares. He estimates that the company, which had profit of $3.67 a share for its most recent fiscal year, can earn $7 to $9 in a more normal economy. "Maybe it takes a while for demand to get back to prior levels," Pickels adds, "but FedEx is leaner and will have more market share and more earnings power in the next upcycle." FedEx made $6.67 a share for its fiscal year ended May 2007, before the economy tanked.

UPS pegs Dec. 21 as busiest day of 2009

UPS expects to deliver roughly 22M packages on its busiest day this year -- Dec. 21

UPS Inc., the world's largest shipping carrier, expects to deliver roughly 22 million small packages on its busiest day this year -- projected to be Dec. 21.
UPS, based in Atlanta, said Monday that's about a 40 percent increase over normal daily delivery volumes.
It says that for the entire holiday season, stretching from Thanksgiving to Christmas, it expects to deliver roughly 400 million packages around the world, up slightly compared to the 2008 holiday season.
Peak projections from UPS and rival FedEx Corp. are closely watched because they are an indicator of how well the economy, especially in the retail sector, is doing.

U.S. Postal Service Lost $3.8 Billion in 2009

Revenue dives $6.8 billion as mail volume plunges 12.7 percent

The U.S. Postal Service lost $3.8 billion in its fiscal year 2009, in what the chief financial officer called “one of the most challenging (years) in the history of the Postal Service.”
Operating revenue dived $6.8 billion to $68.1 billion as volume plunged 12.7 percent to 177.1 billion pieces.
Cost-cutting efforts resulted in $6 billion in savings and a $4 billion reduction in required payments for retiree health benefits, USPS said. The savings came through job losses for 40,000 career USPS employees as well as reductions in overtime hours, transportation and other costs. The health benefit payment reduction was passed into law for fiscal 2009 to allow USPS to maintain fiscal solvency while continuing to provide service.
Despite the savings, this year’s deficit topped last year’s by $1 billion.

NTSB Chief Urges Fight Against Fatigue

Hersman calls fatigue an 'insidious' problem throughout transportation

Fatigue “is one of the most insidious issues in the transportation industry,” and more must be done to fight it, said Deborah A.P. Hersman, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.
“We establish a 72-hour prior history in every NTSB investigation,” Hersman said at the National Press Club in Washington Nov. 16. “Unfortunately, we find fatigue in more incidents and accidents than you would think.”
She said the NTSB has recommended the Federal Aviation Administration set hours of service rules for flight crews, aviation mechanics and air traffic controllers. It took Congress to change century-old rail employee hours of service rules, she noted.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which has issued truck driver hours of service rules three times since 2003, plans to propose a new HOS rule early next year.

Stocks Gain Over 1%; S&P Closes Above 1,100

The Dow logged a solid 130-plus gain Monday after Fed Chairman Bernanke signaled plans to leave rates low for a while but ended off its highs after banking analyst Meredith Whitney said the recent market rally is not rooted in fundamentals and the U.S. economy is likely to fall back into a recession next year.
Still, all three major indexes closed at new highs for the year as a weak dollar boosted commodity stocks and a government report showed retail sales rose in October.

Trucker ABF, Teamsters in Concession Talks

Carrier expects to win wage concessions similar to givebacks at YRC
Less-than-truckload carrier ABF Freight System is deep in talks with the Teamsters union to win concessions similar to those the union gave financially troubled competitor YRC Worldwide, including an overhaul of the company’s pension system, the carrier said.
“We are in a dialogue with the Teamsters and hopefully we will reach an agreement soon,” ABF Chief Operating Officer Wesley R. Kemp told reporters Monday at the annual Transcomp and Intermodal Expo.
Kemp said the carrier expects to win wage concessions similar to the givebacks that lowered wages some 15 percent at YRC, the nation’s largest LTL operator. ABF also wants to restructure the company’s pension system by switching to a profit-sharing arrangement to match the savings YRC is gaining from an 18-month hiatus from contributing to the driver pension plan.

Swift’s Moyes ‘Bullish’ on 2010

Truckload leader sees ‘opportunities for price improvement’ with demand up, capacity down

Swift Transportation chief Jerry Moyes, turning aside downbeat views of the transportation economy, said Tuesday the truckload giant is seeing gains in shipping and improving balance between supply and demand that signals steady improvement for trucking companies in coming months.
“We’re pretty bullish on 2010,” the chairman and CEO of Phoenix-based Swift said in an interview. “Not just because of the demand but it’s also very important that the supply of capacity has been reduced.”
Swift has dropped some 4,000 of the company’s 18,000 tractors from its fleet and taken some $200 million in annual costs out of its system, part of a broad drive among carriers across the transportation world to cut capacity and operating costs in line with the persistently low demand during the economic downturn.

Knight, Celadon Resist Pressure to Cut Capacity

Maintaining fleets increases long-term potential in recovery, carriers say

Not all motor carriers see cutting excess capacity as the best road to higher rates and improved profitability. Knight Transportation and Celadon Group are among those holding onto trucks and banking on being able to pick up freight from competitors in a recovery.
“With freight demand seemingly have bottomed, we decided to maintain our fleet size and prepare for the opportunity for growth rather than reduce the fleet size,” Knight Transportation said in its third quarter report. Its tractor count fell by 48 from a year ago to 3,752 units. But while it cut 220 company trucks, it added 172 owner-operators.
“We believe that our level of profitability, fleet renewal strategy, and use of owner-operators should enable us to internally finance attractive levels of fleet growth when demand conditions are right,” the company said.

October Truck Numbers Point to Possible Pre-Buy

Truck sales jumped in October compared to the previous month, although they're still down from year-ago numbers.
Class 8 U.S. retail truck sales for October were 8,500, according to data from Ward's Communications, up from September's 7,769. October 2008 saw sales of 12,073. Year-to-date Class 8 sales stand at 65,880, down from 110,128 the same time a year ago.
"All indications are that the October increase is due to the filling up of remaining 2009 production slots for trucks with the older 2007 engine technology and to avoid the new 2010 engines, which due to tighter emission standards will be more expensive and will employ new technology," said Eric Starks, president of FTR.

Top Trucking Executives Eye 2010 Rebound

Executives foresee fall out of poorly-capitalized motor carriers

Trucking companies that are surviving in today's treacherous economic environment will be well positioned to prosper when traffic begins to rebound next year, according to carrier and shipper executives meeting in Anaheim, Calif.
"It will take six to eight months before we get out of this mess," David L. Howland, vice president-rail at Schneider National, told the annual transportation conference sponsored by the Intermodal Association of North America, the National Industrial Transportation League and the Transportation Intermediaries Association.
By late summer, however, international and domestic freight volumes will pick up and rates will be on the rise. Banks, which have been lenient with struggling motor carriers because they did not want to be stuck with hundreds of devalued trucks, will demand pay-back, and many poorly-capitalized motor carriers will go bankrupt.

No Concession Talks With ABF, Teamsters Say

Union's freight director denies contract, benefits negotiations under way

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters said no talks are under way with ABF Freight System that would result in concessions for its members.
"There is an erroneous media report that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters National Freight Division is in negotiations with ABF that would result in concessions for our members represented under the National Master Freight Agreement," Teamsters National Freight Director Tyson Johnson said in a statement today. "Let me be clear – this report is false," he said.
Speaking at the annual Transcomp and Intermodal Expo on Nov. 16, ABF Chief Operating Officer Wesley R. Kemp told reporters, "We are in a dialogue with the Teamsters and hopefully we will reach an agreement soon."
He said the carrier expects to win wage concessions similar to the givebacks that lowered wages some 15 percent at YRC Worldwide, the nation’s largest LTL operator. The agreement between the Teamsters and YRC negotiated a couple of months ago, said Kemp, “was just too great a difference to ignore” between the cost structures at the country’s only large unionized LTL carriers.

Private Equity Firm to Buy Gainey

Gainey Transportation, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization more than a year ago, is being purchased by a private equity firm.
According to published reports, Minnesota-based Wayzata Capital will pay $77.8 million for the Michigan-based company. The deal was approved by the bankruptcy judge Nov. 17.
Gainey filed for bankruptcy protection in October 2008 facing a more than $240 million in debt and pressure from lenders, especially Wachovia Bank. At the time of the bankruptcy filing, company owner Harvey Gainey blamed the nation's financial crisis for forcing its lenders, including Wachovia, "to make ill-advised decisions based on their own cash constraints ... our exhaustive efforts to negotiate a constructive agreement with our lending group have been met with a series of increasingly aggressive actions by these lenders."

Art Cashin: Housing Data Better Than it Looks?

Construction of new homes in the United States fell sharply last month to the lowest level since April, a sign of potential weakness in the economy's recovery.
“[Housing] starts were down very sharply, but that might be weather-related because permits were only down slightly and if you’re a contractor and you’re having a rainy week, you might want to hold off on building a new home so you don’t get the added cost of doing it,” Cashin told CNBC.
“So you have to look under the headlines to see if it’s perhaps weather-related.”

Wednesday was a good example. The metal rose to $1,141.20 an ounce, after swinging between $1,136 and a new high of $1,153.40. As gold tallied its eighth record session this month, stocks were treading water, with the Dow losing 11 to 10,424 and the S&P 500 giving up less than a point to 1109. The Nasdaq was down 10 at 2193. The Dollar Effect: Stocks With Big Foreign Sales Are Booming

By now, every investor who's been paying even mild attention to the markets knows of the strong connection between stocks and the dollar. When the dollar goes down, the market goes up and vice versa.

But is there any method to the market's madness? Are all stocks going up when the dollar falls, or are investors making any actual choices? Have they bid up higher those stocks that could reasonably be expected to benefit from a falling dollar because of greater overseas profits?

Trucking Index Improves but Remains Low

Negative reading signals long wait for substantial recovery

The trucking industry is still mired in the recession and likely won’t pull out until some time next year, according to a widely accepted index of conditions in the market. The FTR Trucking Conditions Index improved in October but remains well below neutral.
The TCI for October increased for the third consecutive month to minus 16.4. That negative score, still well below the neutral level of zero, was the highest reading in the eleven months since November 2008.
“The continued negative TCI reading is a clear sign that the transportation industry is still struggling from the steep downturn seen late last year and into 2009,” said Eric Starks, president of FTR. “Real acceleration in the trucking fundamentals that we track for this index will likely wait for a substantial recovery in volumes and capacity utilization which we don’t expect to occur for at least another year.”

Freight Recovery Most Likely Headed For Elongated 'U' in 2010

During an interactive session at the 2009 Intermodal Expo and TransComp in Anaheim, Calif., this week, 44 percent of the audience said they expect the economic recovery to play out in a "U" shape, or a slow upturn. Meanwhile, 26 percent anticipate a "W" shape, or a double dip in economic activity. For the most part, panelists agreed with the audience and expect an elongated "U," meaning the economic recovery is coming, but it will be slow going.
According to Seidl, there has been a slight uptick in the truckload, rail and chemical sectors, but the jury is still out on less-than-truckload. In fact, when the audience was asked which sector will see the most downward pricing pressure in 2010, LTL received 39 percent of the vote, followed by truckload at 24 percent, and ocean at 22 percent. However, the analysts said the fate of LTL will depend largely on whether YRC Worldwide stays afloat or not. Many industry analysts believe the LTL giant is headed for bankruptcy. With it out of the picture, capacity would tighten and rates would rise.

New Vehicle Registrations Down 38.7 Percent in Third Quarter

A reflection of continued softness in the commercial market and downward pressure on demand, new registrations for commercial vehicles during the third quarter were down 38.7 percent from the 2008 period, according to the September issue of Polk Commercial Vehicle Solutions' Commercial Vehicle Market Intelligence Report. As a result, Polk has reduced its Index of U.S. Commercial Vehicle Activity for the 2009 calendar year by 9,000 units, with the forecast that 2009 will end at about 323,000 units.
On a positive note, used commercial vehicle registrations for the third quarter were up 46.5 percent from 2008, totaling 166,600 units. Used truck activity accounted for 68 percent of commercial vehicle transactions in the third quarter, compared to 49 percent in the year-ago period. "The market for used commercial equipment, as indicated by the level of used vehicle transactions remains near historical highs," the report said.

Air France-KLM Loses $219 Million on Cargo

Cargo yields collapse in “sometimes desperate” competition

Air France-KLM said its cargo unit booked a $219 million second quarter loss against a year earlier profit of nearly $15 million and won't break even for at least another eighteen months.
The worsening cargo performance contributed to Europe's biggest airline swinging to a $70 million operating loss in the three months to September 30 from a $583 million profit in the same period in 2008.
The Franco-Dutch carrier posted a larger-than-expected net loss, equal to the loss in the cargo segment, of $219 million against year-earlier income of $40.2 million as revenue plunged 19 percent to $8.3 billion.
Air France-KLM has grounded 11 of its 29 freighters -- including eight Boeing 747-400Fs -- amid speculation it plans eventually to hive off its freighter fleet to Martinair, its Dutch cargo and charter subsidiary.
The airline said it plans to trim its 105,000 payroll by 4,500 in the year to end March 2010 and seek further voluntary jobs cuts of between three percent and five percent by March 2011.

Bigger Trucks Greener in Maine, Study Says

Trucking group finds fuel, emissions benefits to use of heavier tractor-trailers

The bigger trucks come, the greener they may run, a trucking research group claims.
In a study that marks another step in a marathon debate over longer, heavier trucks, trucking researchers found that allowing 100,000 pound trucks already permitted on state roads in Maine to use Interstates could reduce the fuel they consume and emissions.
"This research quantifies how the mutual goals of resource conservation and emission reductions could be advanced by allowing Maine to apply state weight laws to its Interstate highways,” said Mike Card, president of Combined Transport in Central Point, Ore., and a member of ATRI’s Board of Directors.

Bet On The Economy With Fed Ex

In a somewhat similar fashion, investors might want to consider a bet on global shipping giant Federal Express (NYSE:FDX) as a excellent long-term play on a sustained economic rebound. Like Buffett, I emphasize "long-term." While Berkshire will likely own Burlington for decades, investors would likely need to consider a five-year horizon to appreciate what Fed Ex offers as an investment.
Of course the million dollar question is when and if we will see a normal economy anytime soon. Recessions may officially end in a relatively short period of time, but their aftershocks can go on for years. Nonetheless, FedEx helps businesses and the economy function by facilitating the efficient transport of goods. Just like rails are important to things like coal and grains, FedEx is critical to the transport of documents, packages and business inventory. Such items will naturally go through periods of declining volume, but as with any cycle, usually improve over time. That improvement should translate into increased profit for FedEx and reward long-term investors.

UPS Raises 2010 Rates 4.9 Percent

Increase in average pricing marks boost over FedEx announced rate hike

UPS announced an effective 4.9 percent rate increase for all parcel and express services for 2010 on Friday, exceeding the price increases set earlier by rival FedEx.
The average increase effective Jan. 4, 2010 will include a 6.9 percent hike in the average base price along with a cut in the fuel surcharge index of two percentage points.
The increase comes two months after FedEx Express announced an effective 3.9 percent increase for 2010, based on a 5.9 percent boost in average express pricing for U.S. domestic and U.S. export shipments and a similar cut in the fuel surcharge.
The increase is in line with some of the parcel carrier’s most aggressive annual rate increases in recent years. But it follows a year in which earnings at UPS and other operators have tumbled and pricing has fallen amid declining demand despite the withdrawal of DHL from domestic U.S. service.
UPS said in its report on the third quarter ending Sept. 30 that average revenue per package -- a rough estimate of pricing -- fell 9.1 percent from the same period a year ago, including a 4.3 percent drop in yield for ground shipments and a 23.6 percent decline in overnight express shipments.

USPS Narrows Branch Closure Review

The U.S. Postal Service said Friday it is narrowing its list of stations and branches under review for possible closure down to 241, part of an effort to cut millions of dollars in operating costs.
The stations and branches, which the USPS did not identify, were culled from a list of some 3,300 the Postal Service began looking at over the summer under a plan to consolidate facilities around the country because of sharply reduced mail demand.
“To shore up its finances, the Postal Service is looking at every aspect of its business to economize,” said Steven J. Between the California Air Resources Board's emissions rules and the Port of Los Angeles' efforts to regulate trucking and clean the air, the state of California stands to lead the country in critical issues related to trucking.
However these regulations play out, they are sure to have an effect on the national transportation network, according to panelists at the 2009 Intermodal Expo and TransComp in Anaheim, Calif., this week.
While the environmental regulations would be good for business, the underlying implications would not, panelists said. The speakers were referring to the portion of the port's Clean Truck Program that aims to ban owner-operators, with the rationale that these drivers are too poor to afford lower-emissions trucks. The American Trucking Associations has been challenging this in court, seeking an injunction to block the owner-operator ban and other concession requirements.

Thanksgiving Week Stuffed With Economic News

Markets will take in a heavy helping of economic reports in the shortened Thanksgiving holiday week, but the main course remains the dollar.
In the past week, the dollar gained some traction as stocks were mixed and Treasurys saw a rush of buyers. Commodities finished the week mostly higher. Economic headlines in the week ahead include important real estate data, durable goods, revisions to third quarter GDP and weekly jobless claims. There are also $119 billion in Treasury notes and billions more in bills up for auction in the first three days of the week.
"I don't think people are looking for a big leg up after this, at least into the end of the year. I certainly don't see us being above 1150 before the end of this year," he said. "I would say between 1025 and 1100 at the end of the year."

Credit Markets On Edge About When the Fed Will Raise Rates

A deep-seated anxiety about how soon the Federal Reserve will raise rates has caused the widest chasm between short- and long-dated Treasury yields in 20 years, despite the Fed's assurances low rates will stay for some time.
If this wide gap persists, it will lend credence to the notion of a sluggish US economic recovery, as banks and money managers refrain from lending and investing.

Arkansas Best: Small Cap Trucker Set to Go the Distance

Relative to the railroads, the trucking industry has fallen off the radar screen. Berkshire's Burlington (BNI) buy didn't help. To make matters worse, the trucking industry has driven off a cliff with plummeting freight volumes and falling prices. Despite these troubles, there is reason for optimism. And at least one LTL carrier will be a big winner.
One catalyst that may accelerate this possible future is the demise of YRC Worldwide. The company launched a debt exchange on November 9. Nonetheless, persistent operating losses weigh on a company already paying for its debt-fueled existence. YRC may not live to see 2011. In this respect, continued weakness in shipping volumes may actually help those with financial staying power. If (or when) YRC fails, industry survivors will have an incredible opportunity to poach customers from a dying giant.

Truck Tonnage Hits Smallest Drop of 2009

Seasonally adjusted index falls 5.2 percent

Truck tonnage declined in October, but it was the smallest drop in 2009, said the American Trucking Associations.
Compared with October 2008, seasonally adjusted tonnage fell 5.2 percent, which was the best year-over-year showing since November 2008. In September, the index was down 7.3 percent from a year earlier.
Trucks hauled more freight in October than in September, but on a seasonally adjusted basis, the industry declined slightly month to month, ATA said.
“Repeating what I said last month, the trucking industry should not be alarmed by the small decreases in September and October,” said Bob Costello, ATA chief economist. “The economy is behaving as expected, with starts and stops. This is being reflected in truck tonnage, as well as most economic indicators.”

Tuesday's Heavy Dose of Data to Dictate 'Risk' Behavior

Risk is on so far this holiday week, but the bigger question is how long will that trade work.
The dollar fell and commodities were mostly higher as the Dow climbed Monday to its highest level in more than a year. Treasuries were a mixed picture, with buyers pushing yields in the long end lower. The Dow rose 132 to 10,320, while the S&P 500 climbed 14 to 1106. Gold continued to shine, closing at a new high of $1164.30, an increase of 1.6 percent, but oil was just barely higher at $77.48 per barrel.

Choosing a Second Career

Lost your job or just want to reboot your life? We calculate returns on setting up a franchise, buying a business and going back to school.

Tammy Beil was among hundreds laid off from recession-hit courier FedEx Freight in April. The 51-year-old former marketing vice president decided to use the experience of losing a job to make over her life. With severance pay in hand, she is in the midst of packing up her Memphis, Tenn. home and returning to Philadelphia, where she lived previously.
"No one likes to be in this position, but the good part is being laid off forces you to stop and examine yourself," she says.
For Beil, as for millions of others these days, such examination involves asking herself both what she wants to do and where she's likely to find the best risk-adjusted return on her time and money. So far, she's taking a very broad view, including starting a business, buying an existing one, acquiring a franchise or finding a whole new sort of corporate gig.

UPS driver delivers packages, economic analysis

* Deliveryman sees recession's scars on daily ride

In this gloomy economy, many investors and consumers rely on a steady stream of government data, televised talking heads and politicians to help them make their financial decisions.
But in Northern New Jersey, some just wait for a big, brown truck to drive up.
Along a 35-mile route in the suburbs just west of New York City, a large swath of customers regard their package deliveryman, Vinny Plateroti, as their personal economic oracle.
"People are always coming up to me and asking me, 'What are you seeing out there?'" Plateroti said, piloting his truck through a series of stops in a strip mall parking lot on a chilly November day. "They ask me 'How is business?', because they think UPS is a barometer, and they are nervous about their own business."

US Firms Hit by Payroll Taxes at Exactly the Wrong Time

Dave Huston's Kansas-based plastics company is down to 34 employees from 63 a year ago. With the U.S. recession starting to retreat, he would like to add back workers but will likely buy new equipment instead.
The reason? With Kansas joining the ranks of U.S. states scrambling to shore up a near-insolvent unemployment insurance fund, Huston's business is facing an almost certain rise in state payroll taxes in 2010.
It's a hit his business cannot afford — and one that virtually ensures he will not be hiring new employees anytime soon, even as the economy does slowly pick up.

YRC Worldwide extends debt-for-equity swap deadline

YRC Worldwide Inc. has given bondholders another day to swap about $537 million in debt for 95 percent of the company’s common shares, a vital step in YRC’s bid to navigate around bankruptcy.

In a Wednesday statement, YRC said it adjusted the deadline to comply with SEC guidelines, which require the offer to be open for at least 20 days. The previous deadline had not accounted for Veterans Day. Changes were made based on feedback from the SEC as part of a standard process, YRC said.

Double Stack Trains Provide More Fuel Savings Than Truck:hysterical:

Double stack freight rail transportation is up to five times more fuel efficient than truck transportation, according to a new report by the Federal Railroad Administration. The "Comparative Evaluation of Rail and Truck Fuel Efficiency on Competitive Corridors" report indicated that rail fuel efficiency has improved by about 20 percent, or 1.1 percent per year, between 1990 and 2006.
"While all types of transportation are vital to the distribution of goods across the country, this study shows that utilizing America's freight rail system can lead to significant fuel savings," said Joseph Szabo, FRA administrator. "The environmental benefits of these positive changes over the last two decades are enormous."

Dow Closes at 13-Month High; VIX Nears 20

Stocks posted modest gains Wednesday, but it was enough to propel the Dow and S&P to new 13-month closing highs, as economic data buoyed recovery hopes — and investors' appetite for risk.

Art Cashin: Financials Trades a Sign of 'Caution'

Markets zigzagged at the open on Wednesday after a mixed bag of economic data: jobless claims and personal spending rose above expectations but durable goods fell short. Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services, shared his market insights.
“The dollar’s moves are more important” than today's data, Cashin told CNBC.
“They have been moving the market now for almost two full months—whenever the dollar index dips, stocks go up… The initial claims may have benefited from the holiday—employers are a little loath to fire or lay someone off a week before Thanksgiving.”

There Is a 50% Chance of US Double-Dip: Strategist

There will be a short-term pullback after Thanksgiving in stock markets and there is a 50 percent chance that the US economy will double-dip, according to Paul Schatz, president of Heritage Capital.
“We’re going to probably have a short term pull back after Thanksgiving to the first, second week of December, but from there, like most pullbacks we’ve seen, it will be a time to buy, not sell,” Schatz told CNBC Wednesday.
The economy isn’t safe though, he warned, because “there is no real recovery; it’s not sustainable.”

Whether investors are at their desks or at the mall, Black Friday shopping will be a theme of the shortened post-Thanksgiving session.

Toyota Makes Recall Fix And So Long Saab

A month and a half after announcing a safety recall of 3.8 million vehicles as risk of having accelerators trapped under floor mats, Toyota has a plan to fix the problem.
The automaker will be replacing the accelerators in the vehicles affected and in some models; it will install a brake override system.
Saab is not officially dead, but it's pretty darn close.
Once I broke the story yesterday about Koenigsegg Group getting cold feet and calling off plans to buy Saab, I noticed the lack of an outcry from Saab loyalists. The silence, in my opinion, says everything you need to know about how far Saab has fallen and why I doubt GM will try to revive plans to sell it.

Government says debt restructuring not to include terminal operator

The government of Dubia moved Friday to insulate container terminal operator DP World from the debt crisis hitting Dubai World, the state-controlled industrial conglomerate and parent of the port business.
The Persian Gulf emirate sought to reassure ocean carriers and shippers about the position of DP World after it announced Wednesday that it is seeking a six months standstill on approximately $5.7 billion in Dubai World’s debt obligations.

Dow Ends Week Flat Despite Dubai Selloff

After all that, we're right back where we started.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 154.48, or 1.5 percent, Friday, but ended the week at 10,309.92, less than 10 points below where it started the week as gains logged before Thanksgiving offset today's losses.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each lost 1.7 percent today but also ended the week little changed.
Stocks declined across the board but financial and commodity-related sectors were the hardest hit, after Dubai, a surreal Mideast boomtown which boasts an indoor ski slope and three palm-shaped islands, said it would ask creditors for a 6-month standstill on about $60 billion of debt, which it is seeking to restructure.

Next Week: Cash In Now Or Wait For A Santa Rally?

The challenge for stock investors is whether to pocket more of the year's gains or ride it out in hopes of a Santa Claus rally.
The stock market in the week ahead promises to be volatile, after Dubai's move to reschedule its debt blew a chill across risk assets globally and sent investors into the safe haven of the dollar and bonds.

Dubai Spooks Investors But May Bring Buying Opportunity

While the immediate reaction Friday to the Dubai crisis was to sell stocks, many investors are more likely to wait for the issue to unfold before making any big decisions.
In fact, caution rather than panic prevailed after the United Arab Emirates nation's ability to pay on its debts came into question.
If anything, pros seemed to be anticipating a buying opportunity should Wall Street get overly pessimistic about the Dubai ramifications.

Dubai's Debt Woes Signal New Era for Creditors

The fact that Dubai has been struggling under huge debts is not a surprise to anyone who has followed the Emirate’s economy over the last 10 years.
A huge property-led boom saw money pile into infrastructure and construction projects like the Palm Jumeirah or the soon-to-be-completed 810 meter Burj Dubai tower that will dwarf any building on earth.
Building the world’s tallest building has always been viewed by investors as a sign that a local economy is about to head south. Dubai World, the most indebted of Dubai’s state-sponsored companies, owes $60 billion of which $22 billion must be refinanced by 2011.
