If this post doesn't ruffle some feathers, nothing will. I was a smoker for 20 years. I was able to quit 30 years ago so I can appreciate arguments on both sides of this issue. The company policy on smoking is plain and simple. No smoking in any Fedex facility or company vehicle including company cars. So far its just a policy without any teeth in it, except on the local level in some isolated cases. If the company gets hit in the pocket book over this issue, that will change overnight. If you are a smoker, and you think sprays or scenes will cover up your activities, your sadly mistaken. I won't go into the health issues on smoking, we all know what they are. Smokers feel like second class citizens and rightly so. The politicians have jumped on the band wagon by placing a sin tax on tobacco products. The tobacco company have counteracted by increasing the level of nicotine in their products, making it even harder to become smoke free. Nicotine is one of the most addictive legal drugs on the market. I welcome all replies on this issue. If someone is able to come up with an original thought on this problem that I haven't heard before, I'll be pleasantly surprised. TP

As to smoking in trucks, hard to enforce when our SCM says in a meeting in front of drivers, " if both of you smoke, go ahead but crack the window. I smoke and I do it in my car. " It is a bad habit and I don't like my hands smelling like week old ash trays from touching the steering wheel after a smoker. I do know how to wash my hands, no anti bacterial soap need, and use frebreeze . There is alot of stress right now in some centers without having to look over your shoulder for everything. Soon maybe Fedex will say no smoking on any Fedex property.

Hey, you want to take a chance to get fired, go ahead and smoke in a tractor. They don't need a reason to fire you, but they would like that you gave them one.

i have always found it interesting that given the documented effects of smoking, they never even mention banning it like they did with diet sweetner.. Oh wait, there are no taxes on diet sweetner..

I don't smoke but I have slip seated with drivers who do. I don't mind if the driver does it with the window cracked and sweeps out the cab after each shift. You can smell it but not that bad. I had a driver once who refused to clean up after himself and left ashes all over the dash and floor, burned holes in the seat and generally was nasty. The truck stank like a bar room ash tray. Amazingly it wasn't the smoking that got him in trouble but the boogers wiped all over the sides of the seat.

So what's your point? :coffee1:

This thread is an absolute joke.It will NEVER be enforced. When you have management tell you that they have to ha ve proof, ie, picture, more than one person see it and write a statement. The statement has to have date and time.Never mind the cigarette burns in the steering wheel. They will take one persons word that someone said something derogatory, politically incorrect. They will write you up without any witnesses. But want believe half the people on the yard that someone is smoking. This policy is a JOKE.

We Have a truck that has two Cigar smokers in it. If we do finally go to assigned trucks to bids or that ride goes to another center someone is not going to be happy! Many have refused to drive it! Fabreeze just doesn't work. I drove one on Monday, I could taste the smoke in my mouth, YUCK! If they enforced that policy their would be a BIG hiring phase!! As it should be, one last monthly meeting and warning and then......................axe!! Why should I have to smell that BS!!

I'm a smoker and I agree with you. Unless two drivers can come to some sort of accomodation that the smoker is just going to have to pull off and get his fix. I don't like the smell either. Most people don't seem to have a problem with it as long as the smoker at least tries to be good about it but some people are more sensative to it and smokers are just going to have to suck it up.

However I do believe that 2 drivers that share a truck should try to work it out themselves. If then the Non-smoker can't get satisfaction then go to management. Whenever I share a truck with a driver I've never dealt with before, I invite him/her to lunch and we hashout ground rules for ourselves. It usually works out better that way

First of all u have to be cought smoking in the truck for some corrective action to take place. The truck can smell and ash could be all over the place and they can't prove it was you who made that mess. Drivers can tell on drivers for smoking in the truck and that don't me anything cause that's one of those flaws my word against yours. I smoke, but not in the truck!!!!!!!!!!! I don't see what the big deal is to stop for 5 min every hour or two depending how long your run is and if your able to just to get out real quick take a couple of puffs and get back to driving. The problem is it's all about routine. Some of the older drivers that smoke are so use to smoking and trucking and nobody will tell you diffrent. For some you get tired around the same time so you smoke and try to wake up. Believe me I come up with the same excuse to smoke and more reasons to quit. It's a bad habit, but what I don't like is that a non-smoker will ***** and ***** about the habbit and they may habbits that the smoker may not like. What I hate even more is when somebody who smoke for several years thinks smokers are a p.o.s and knows what that habbit feels likes but nows things their perfect. I say lets all quit or we all smoke, but lets get along and quit the b.s. There is worse things in the world that should seperate us.

Its Fedex's truck and if they say no smoking then its their call,no agreements between drivers or anything. If they decide to enforce it and you get canned then you are a dumb@$$.

Not this again. We really must not have nothing else to fuss about. I'll be glad when they outlaw it all, smoking, beer, liquor, chewing tobacco, sugar, cell phones, bright lights, fog lights, and rude people, that's just to name a few. Get over it, man up, grow some, but quit bit@!^#@.

As soon as you started calling names you lost the arguement. I agree that unless your name is on the truck it's their call. Rules are rules, however dumb we may think they are. But what about before the no smoking policy. Then if I shared a truck with someone who was sensative to smoke I still would not smoke in the truck. You see, where I come from, we call that courtesy. If everyone who broke the rules got fired the Dallas yard would look like a ghost town.

Im just saying if you break the rules and get canned you have no right to cry foul. They dont enforce much of anything else either, its not just the smoking policy.

what i find very funny in all of this is the guy who smokes is always the one threatened but nothing is ever said about the lowlifes who leave their dip bottles in the truck or dumps them out the window while driving down the road and it ends up all over the door and door handle. just making a point!

Honestly, I feel bad for you smokers. You are all victims of mass marketed propaganda set to control the population, while padding the pockets of America's elite. I would rather not share my truck with you, or the sidewalk with the toothless meth head who was also failed by the system, but I do! It's not right man! Time to change! Ron Paul Revolution 2012!!!!

Honestly, they should give the smokers a raise. Cigarettes are getting very expensive and smokers pay more in taxes?:17142:
