here it is, he/she came out of the saloon building last night.

this morning, it was on the sand, and when i turned on the tank light, he/she made tracks back to the building....lol

i've about done had it with the aquarium sand.

every time i go to vacuum up the debris, of course "some" sand gets vacuumed up as well.

also, my cory (cat fish) actually kick it up, when they scoot all over the place. this stuff gets sucked up into the power head, and clogs that filter, then of course gets sucked up into the main filter.

not to mention, i have to have the water flow slow from the filter, as to not kick up any additional sands.

so off to the pet store, and for a 20.00 bill, i got gravel, but a natural gravel, not one dyed.

took me all of about 2 hours to make the switch over.

i'll never recommend aquarium sand to anyone, stick with gravel.

    oh man bad day......(sorta)

my baby blue wag, that i raised from a small fry, has died. i went to check on the tank, and was going to put on the tank light, and he was wrapped around the power head suction inlet. they all swim around that like it's no big deal, and it is not set on any extreme suction. i think it had died, and was floating and the suction pulled him to it..

man, he lived from the time he was born in early April? it's in posting # 131, that i mention the mother had about 6?

    she died giving birth.

the others died, one by one, and this was the only survivor.

but it it did grow in these past few months, and the whole idea of having a fish tank is a learning process, i don't think you learn everything and become a know it all.

i don't feel too badly, it had clean warm water, food, and a balanced chemical system, that all the fish are thriving in.

so basically nearly 9 months of life.

    i'll take it.

and no, it did not get a burial at the porcelain gateway to the ocean..

someone was in the bathroom, the house is busy, so it went into the trash.

not a fitting burial, but then again, it's what i had to do.

now back to cooking that ham!!

i missed having live plants for the tank. they provide oxygen, as well as lower harmful nitrites which can be deadly to the fish, if left unchecked.

but, i hated having a full tank of gravel as the food and poop get deep into gravel, and it is difficult to vacuum it all out, with out draining the tank dry.

i had sand, but that was just as bad when cleaning, as now sand gets vacuumed up as well, PLUS it can get into the motors for the filter and power head, which can cause them to stop running, and burn them out.

so, i was thinking of maybe a "planter" in the tank...originally, i thought maybe a drinking glass, then maybe an ash tray (if i can still find those.

so off to walmart i went, into the bathroom section......nope, not even a clear soap dish.

went into the kitchen isle, and found what they call an "organizer"

so for under $3.00, i buy that, and off i then go to the pet store.

got a java fern, and a gold ribbon, and a white ribbon plants. (frankly, i do not see any "gold" in that plant...

what i was not aware of was that the ribbon plants, were actually 4 plants per container......i thought it was just one.

so, along the back of that "organizer" are the ribbon plants, and in front, the java fern.

then i put in the white gravel that i had, to hold them up right.

now, at the very least, when i go to clean the tank, it will be a much smaller area of gravel to vacuum.

yesterday, the fish were swimming all around and in between the plants, as i caught them doing, before i snapped this picture.

    i dunno.....experimentation, after experimentation......
