Werner to appeal $90M verdict in 2014 crash lawsuit

https://www.ccjdigital.com/werner-t...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-3

"In a statement, Werner denies fault in the crash, saying a pickup truck (in which the plaintiffs were riding) lost control in on the opposite side of the interstate of a Werner truck, crossed the median and spun into the path of the oncoming Werner tractor-trailer, which was driven by Werner driver Shizar Ali."

Insane Verdict, based on insane logic, by Houston jury, IMHO.

Truckers getting fined for ignoring I-77 detour in West Virginia

https://www.overdriveonline.com/truckers-getting-fined-for-ignoring-i-77-detour-in-west-virginia/

"The Register-Herald in Beckley, W.V., is reporting truckers and other large vehicles are being asked to take exit 1 off of I-77 and follow detour signs east along Route 460 before getting back on I-77 at exit 9. The report notes that state troopers have written more than 100 tickets to truckers, with no warnings, in just over a week since the project began."
Why such a drastic detour? It's been a while since I've been out that way, but isn't that part of the WVA toll road?

Enforcement disparities, device confusion ring in first months of ELD mandate, says former FMCSA boss

https://www.ccjdigital.com/enforcem...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-1

"Typically, the non-registered device citation comes because drivers are using an AOBRD, which doesn’t need to be registered, Sandberg says. Drivers don’t know how to explain that it’s an AOBRD and law enforcement doesn’t know to ask the question, she says."

"As the industry comes to terms with enforcement of the ELD mandate, Sandberg recommends carriers pay particular attention to:

  • Unassigned drive time. Anytime a driver forgets to log in and they drive it will show up. Then the next driver must either except or reject that entry. “This is the first thing they ask for in an audit,” Sandberg says, “because they know this is a place drivers can try and falsify logs by not signing it.”
  • Odometer jumps/skips when a driver unplugs the ELD to use the vehicle for personal conveyance. Carriers can avoid violations by having a personal conveyance policy for when FMCSA asks for the odometer skip report.
  • Violations – FMCSA will ask for the violation report.
  • Maintenance of supporting documents.
  • Roadside violations. Challenge them when it appears enforcement made an error, she says.
  • Audits. Carriers should know how to run reports and retrieve data in the event of an audit, Sandberg says. She does not recommend allowing inspectors to sit down at a terminal and look at their system. “Make them ask for specific drivers and give them a copy of the report,” she says. “They may ask for (access to your system), but you don’t have to do it,” she says."

Four fleets announce driver pay increases

https://www.ccjdigital.com/four-fle...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-2

"The total pay increase comes to $11 million and ranges from 5.3 percent to 25 percent for drivers depending on tenure and position (solo, team, trainer, etc.). Brandon Harrison, chief sales officer, says C.R. England drivers are now among the highest paid in the industry."

C.R. England? Didn't they used to be a bottom feeder? :scratchhead:

Roadcheck enforcement spree next week, inspectors to key in on hours of service violations ( June 5-7)

https://www.ccjdigital.com/roadchec...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-3

"We thought this year would be a perfect opportunity to focus on the importance of the hours-of-service regulations.”

However, inspectors will perform full Level I inspections on most rigs checked during the inspection blitz. Level I inspections are the most thorough, including examination of both driver compliance and vehicle-related violations."

That's like how Challenger Motor Freight is crowing about their new pay package for drivers, saying that their drivers are getting "first class" treatment.

Challenger was the lowest paid TL outfit in Canada. They paid less than even Schneider, on the basis that they started buying better equipment for the driver's. Now they can't stop talking about a raise. They used to pay $0.40/mi, the last time I saw a posted rate. So the question is, how high is the raise to make them "first class"?

Personally, I smell bullshit.

They still are
I always thought they (England) had some of the best looking trucks out there. But the pay was always insulting. I preferred, at the time, to drive an ugly (cabover) truck... Priorities, ya know?

Of course it's not ALL about the rate. If the "experience" is top shelf, one might overlook some shortcoming. I'd bet they offer neither.

XPO drivers in Erie, Pa., file for Teamsters representation

"Truck operators out of XPO Logistics‘ terminal in Erie, Pa., have filed for representation by the Teamsters Union. The drivers will vote Friday on whether to join the union."

Has XPO learned NOTHING over the past few years? Most drivers don't go through this without some just cause.

It's really not that far out of the way maybe a couple extra miles.
True, the detour’s not that far out of the way but it causes a daily 5 mile backup just trying to get to the East River tunnel...even longer on Fridays and holidays!! I can only imagine what this summer is going to be like once school lets out!!

The detour for trucks is only going northbound. It will change in July.
