Amazon tries 'crowdsourcing' deliveries

http://www.fleetowner.com/fleet-man...m=email&elq2=e7e9029c21a7422489d8137d81b691ba

"There's a set formula to get going. Would-be Amazon delivery business owners can buy in for as little as $10,000 in startup costs, according to the company. If hired, they'll spend three weeks in training starting with a week assimilating the company culture at Amazon's headquarters in Seattle and two weeks with established delivery business owners.

That second week is spent shadowing others through the delivery process, and the third includes taking out delivery vans, troubleshooting issues that arise, and taking part in delivery station meetings."

"A DSP business, if successfully executed, can expect to run a fleet of 20-40 vans and Amazon "projects" a net an annual profit potential of $75,000 to $300,000, with annual revenue in the $1-4.5 million range."

And, it seems, they are serious... :scratchhead:

Risk/Reward? Check
Amazon "assimilation"? Check
"Potential" O/R? Check

Yeah, sign me up for that, right away... <insert sarcasm>
Speaking as an owner/operator, I would never sign a contract with Amazon. At least Ground pays (it's usually the contractors holding the profits for themselves) where Amazon doesn't even pay.

"COROLLA, NC - A tractor-trailer driver who was following GPS directions got stuck in the sand in the Outer Banks.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that the big rig drove off the end of N.C. 12 Monday, getting stuck in deep sand a few feet from the surf.

The trucker was reportedly following a GPS signal before they realized the pavement was coming to an end. They tried to turn around on the beach, but became bogged down in the deep sand, Carl Seto, owner of Seto’s Towing and Service Center, told the newspaper."

Now what DUMBASS would follow a GPS onto a beach? I mean, c'mon. That's worse than driving into a lake.

House bill would require DOT to study how many drivers quit trucking over ELD mandate

https://www.ccjdigital.com/house-bi...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-4

"H.R. 6159, introduced by North Dakota Rep. Kevin Cramer, was filed June 20 with no co-sponsors into the House’s Transportation Committee. Read the bill’s text at this link."

Seems like a waste, as the horse is already out of the barn. The results of such a study will not make any difference. Conduct your own study, Mr. Cramer, on your own dime...

Yeah, NO comprehensible excuse at all (unless done for spite). I'd like to know more about the so called driver. Experience, training? The question of judgement has already been answered...

As for the Company... Here ya go:

“Our first criterion is always safe and highly qualified professional truck drivers,” said Gerdin. “IDC has an experienced driver base with improving safety results over the past several years, and we are impressed by their culture."

So they want to find this out why? Not everyone who quit over this was a chronic cheater. A lot of people, specifically owner/operators, counted the ELD mandate as the last straw in the stripping of their independence. It's hard to blame them when you consider just how long the honor system was in place and acceptable.

I support ELD's, but some people who are honest just want to be left alone.

FMCSA seeks industry feedback on autonomous trucks at listening session this week

https://www.ccjdigital.com/fmcsa-se...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-5

"The upcoming session, set for Thursday, July 12, will be held during the 2018 Automated Vehicles Symposium at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Pacific time. Comments will be accepted from in-person participants, as well as from comments submitted online. A similar session was held last month at the University of Michigan."

"The agency is focusing on autonomous levels 3-5, which range from vehicles requiring a driver who is ready to take control of the vehicle at any time to vehicles capable of performing all driving functions under all conditions.

Comments for this week’s listening session can be submitted at www.regulations.gov by searching Docket No. FMCSA-2018-0037 once the notice is published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, July 10."

Volvo Trucks Attacks Technician Shortage by Expanding Training Program

So the article states that around 130,000 truck mechanics make more than $48,000. That could be $50,000 then? They want people with knowledge to maintain trucks that could have as many as 18 different computer programs on them, let alone the regular mechanical things, and do it for less than 50,000 a year. Pay and Benefits....
