I see conway also plays the "what terminal do we charge it to" game. They probably get to write off all the tore up freight. Is this a game of how to write off the biggest loss possible ? Or move the freight as cheaply as possible ?

O.R.? Why, O.D. of course! They are apparently magical and have secret knowledge.Who is number 1 in O.R. ?
Speaking for myself, I am an outsider who never worked for Con-way. However, we all do more or less the same thing, and I am curious about what the XPO acquisition means for not only your operation, but how it might affect the industry as a whole. Plus, I run into your P&D drivers all day, and I actually care what happens to them. You've got some good people there.Whats the deal with so many non con-way employees posting in the con-way area? I'm genuinely curious the reason for it. Did you guys use to work here or want to work here or are just generally curious of other LTL carriers?
On the other side, why isn't there more con-way employees on boards like these? There are thousands of us but yet only like 10 posters or so.

Also, some of us are addicted to Truckingboards for some reason and lurk around most of the other companies' boards. It is a good way to see what is going on in the LTL business as a whole, what drivers in other companies are bitching about, and remind me what I have to be grateful for when I don't have to deal with some of those same issues. As an outsider I try not to post like a maniac, but I will occasionally participate respectfully.
O d f lWho cares.

Empty trailers don't affect their load factor, or whatever the stupid metric is that's used to gauge loading efficiency. So an empty trailer means nothing, but put one skid on it and the numbers go to hell. Crap like that is ridiculous.

You can thank upper mgmt for that bs. Hiring nothing but yes-men nowadays for fos's, gotta make those #'s. Not to mention all the dsr's and dock workers who fall for the fear mongering when it comes to how much freight you dock vs how much freight you load. God forbid we dock a little freight in order to load a trlr right

I spent 20 years there. I'm genuinely interested in the issues on here. I hope that things get better for everyone. I think lots look but are afraid that the company will know that they are here if they actually post.
The XPO/Conway purchase is the biggest news in the industry.
The audience is significantly larger than the participants.
Yeah, too bad the biggest news in LTL isn't "Con-way Freight remains the #1 LTL carrier for the 5th year in a row "The XPO/Conway purchase is the biggest news in the industry.
Pretty well said, but you forgot one scenario; over a few short years, we become #1, the benchmark, because we have upper mgmt who values the backbone of the company. If you take care of your drivers, and consider their good advice, then your drivers will take care of you.It will either change the industry for everyone. Competing so broadly on such a massive scale. And a lot of smaller companies will be swallowed up and/or run out of business.
Or it will implode on itself. Become a massive bullseye for the entire rest of the industry to attack. Specialty carriers will pop up to take advantage of specific market shares. The big carriers will continue to offer better service or lower claims. They will be reduced to a Swift equivalent. And we will all be long gone.
Or he carries out his master plan. In five years he makes this XPO turn $29 billion in revenue with over $1.5 billion in EBITDA. The company is just to tempting. DHL buys it for a ridiculous figure. And we are all back to square one. If we even managed to survive long enough to see it.
It manages to effect everyone that drives a truck somehow. And so, people are indeed interested.
