ABF | "No more combining breaks"

What question?

I'm well liked. But with thatb said, if OD were close, I would. Closest is 110 miles away. Not feasible.

Let me get this straight. You would be willing to give up your union job at ABF and go to an "at will" employer like OD. I use the term "at will" as in forced layoffs and RIFs (economic terminations) without any regard to length of service ( Payroll seniority) And here I thought you were smarter than that. Please explain your logic.

Yup! Because regardless of what some here say, OD is a good job. Many Teamsters have gone to OD and ended up loving it over there.

With OD's impressive growth, I haven't heard of a big layoff problem.

I don’t understand something and I could use a little help here. I was a city driver for Wilson trucking about 15yrs ago (1999-2000) and I remember having several breaks. This was when cell phones were not new but not everyone had one. Also, it was before browsers (I have never used one) but after peepers. Wilson trucking gave us these walky-talky type phones from Nextel and we could only talk to other Wilson city drivers or dispatch. So my question is: once you get your stops off (or bills delivered) what do you do before starting to make your pickups?

My experience has been that most companies only accept deliveries in the morning and only ship in the afternoon. Has this changed? I remember city dispatch giving me a list of companies that usually ship with Wilson trucking and asking me to go by and see if they had anything for us. And sometimes I had to wait for them to get the freight ready. In other words I would have to wait, sometimes more than an hour, to make the pickup.

I wasn't referring to a big layoff problem. I was referring to OD's policy regarding reductions in force and economic terminations. According to an OD VP's court testimony " We don't lay off"

A valid RIF, Old Dominion argued, can be a defense to termination under FMLA

Old Dominion Vice President of Safety and Personnel Brian Stoddard testified that it was standard operating procedure to use “full-time seniority dates in making decisions of job elimination and economic cutbacks.” Terminating the employee with the least full-time experience, however, was not a written policy and even if this verbal policy was sufficient to establish a bona fide layoff system, the Kersten court found that Old Dominion presented no evidence of a recall system.

In what appeared to be the most damaging testimony, Stoddard said that “if a job cut had to be done, we terminate. We don’t lay off. We don’t leave that possibility that they may come back. They’re terminated.

I have made deliveries right up to closing time. Not often but it happens and never had a problem. Pick ups are taken with a 'time ready' and 'time closed' and we get in there during that window. Early we might have to wait a little and we know which ones are late or early regardless of what they tell us. We rarely wait for freight not ready, we're told to leave and come back later.

The OD drivers I see are micromanaged, are pretty pissy, and arent happy campers.

If I thought they were such a great outfit to work for like you do, moving 110 miles for a dream job would be a small price to pay.

Every OD driver I meant are pretty happy. Unlike most of the guys I work with.

Sorry dude, I'm not moving 110 miles just to make a mindless Teamster Drone happy. Grow up. Lol

Why work with crybaby malcontents when everyday at work you could work with great people at a great job, make more money and sever yourself from any union ties?

It sounds like you like being miserable.

A lot of things about the union **** me off, not the least is the slavishness to the Democrat party and socialism, but I have worked at companies where there is no protection from unreasonable harassment and vunrestrained vindictiveness at the hands of lower level punk managers...it sucks.

Lol. Not miserable. I have many great friends here. A lot of things **** me off about my country, but I still love this country and don't plan on leaving.

Sorry Princess, I'm not leaving.
