Trump Administration Moves to Expand Apprenticeship Programs

    http://www.ttnews.com/articles/trump-administration-moves-expand-apprenticeship-programs

"The Department of Labor is taking steps that would meet the objectives of a presidential executive order and encourage motor carriers and other trucking organizations to create apprenticeships for new employees to receive federal funding while they train to become drivers or maintenance technicians.

Shortages have been identified in both trades."

That's no lie but nobody wants to work any other shift than days and don't want to get their hands dirty as a mechanic. Right now in our shop they need 2-3 guys, 25.40 (top rate) to start, full bennies,no out of pocket except co-pay of $10.00,BUT when they say afternoon (2nd) shift Naw forget it I'm not working that. KIds today are weak and if it's not Monday thur Friday day shift they aren't going to do it sad to say

2.5 million fire extinguishers sold in commercial trucks recalled

    http://www.ccjdigital.com/2-5-milli...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-2

"In total, 142 fire extinguisher models manufactured by Kidde between Jan. 1, 1973, and Aug. 15, 2017, are being recalled. These extinguishers could become clogged, preventing them from discharging as expected, or the nozzles could detach from the units. At least one death has been attributed to the fire extinguishers when emergency responders could not get an extinguisher to work during a car fire in 2014."

Fire extinguishers from 1973 being recalled? Would that be like an extensive recall?

States push to keep highway inner lanes clear for passing

    http://thetrucker.com/News/Story/Statespushtokeephighwayinnerlanesclearforpassing

"Most states already have laws stipulating that the left lane is for passing or turning left, not for cruising. Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, Nevada and Oklahoma are among states with new laws increasing fines and ratcheting up enforcement.

Others are taking a more subtle approach. Missouri nudges drivers with funny signs. Michigan troopers use traffic stops for a teaching moment.

Some experts believe that driving too slow in the passing lane is at least as dangerous as driving too fast because people trapped from behind get frustrated and make dangerous maneuvers, creating anger and accidents."

The last paragraph makes a good point. Stay out of the left lane, so people in a hurry can drive fast.... But don't jack the fines up like they are for a cdl holder on the phone....

Petition to FMCSA: When truck drivers are detained, extend hours of service limit

    http://www.fleetowner.com/driver-lo...ivers-are-detained-extend-hours-service-limit

"Under federal Hours of Service (HOS) regulations, property-carrying drivers can drive for a total of 11 hours within a 14-consecutive-hour period after coming on duty. What happens is that drivers arrive at a stop, a pickup isn't ready or they can't unload and they end up waiting perhaps for hours.

But meanwhile, that ELD is ticking off available consecutive hours of service that those drivers are permitted to operate a heavy truck, cutting down their available window of drive time."

Kind of the whole point of the regulations, the absolute limit to driving after excess on-duty time. Two solutions: Hold shippers/receivers accountable ($$), and/or return the sleeper berth entry to the log. :idunno:

Hundreds of thousands of carriers, many of them smaller, noncompliant with ELDs, figures show

    https://www.thetrucker.com/News/Sto...yofthemsmallernoncompliantwithELDsfiguresshow

" Hill told The Trucker. “Even at the compliance rate in our 370 interviews last week (68 percent compliance) the number is overwhelming, especially when fleets only have five weeks to comply. ELD companies are about to hit their fulfillment deadlines to be able to get the hardware, install and program it by December 17. And that doesn't even mention training drivers and dispatch.”"

Tic, tic, tic... We'll see shortly.

It's not like they haven't had like 2 years or more to get this done. Many still hoping for an extension so the pencil whippers, can continue to violate the law..

We got an email last week indicating that we'll be getting our ELD box from HR sometime this month. It's one of the app-driven ones and it's setup to work with our company phones. Looks simple enough to use.

I myself am looking forward to ditching the paper log. And with this setup I don't need an ugly hole drilled in my dashboard.
