Crime report: Trucking company, owner to pay nearly $2M in penalties after hazmat violations

https://www.ccjdigital.com/crime-re...a3c973&utm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-2

"The bill of lading said the product was slop oil and water, a nonhazardous substance. However, while the driver was pumping the product, a fire ignited and the tanks of the truck burned for eight days until the fire department determined they contained drip gas and not slop oil and water.

Drip gas is a hazardous material, and the truck was not placarded to indicate it held a flammable liquid. Three Custom Carbon Processing employees were seriously injured in the explosion.

After the explosion, Wood [Woody’s Trucking] reportedly directed the driver to place a falsified bill of lading in the burned-out truck to cover up the fact that the company was hauling drip gas without placards. Additionally, the company did not have insurance coverage for hauling drip gas, OIG says."

Romaine Recall Causes Disruption in Trucking Industry

https://www.ttnews.com/articles/romaine-recall-causes-disruption-trucking-industry

"When the Centers for Disease Control said that romaine lettuce was tainted with E. coli, Rose knew what he and his drivers had to do. Two days before Thanksgiving, Rose told drivers to dump their truckloads of romaine lettuce.

The order was the easy part. Finding places to dump the 15 truckloads was another issue. Rose said some of the drivers had difficultly finding a place that would accept the loads.

Eventually, tons of lettuce were sent to landfills and dumps. Rose, who handles much of the Central California lettuce business for the company, told the truckers to keep their landfill receipts"

Great points. It can easily take 45 min (or more) to take an actual 30 min break, by the time legal parking is found. I'd bet this leads to many drivers stopping just anywhere, logging the 30 and rolling, without ever even leaving the truck.
A bathroom break, if that. I try to spend at least 20 minutes out of the cab myself.

Truck orders take seasonal dip in November; approaching 500K units for 2018

https://www.freightwaves.com/news/equipment/november-truck-orders-dip

"Year to date, Class 8 orders are at 468,600 units.

“November typically has a slightly above average order seasonal factor, and as such, actual data is moderately lower when seasonally adjusted. Seasonal adjustment drops November's order intake to 26,800 units, down 29% from October,” said Steve Tam, ACT’s vice president."

"Build slots for both tractors trailers have been filling up, with most tractor orders taking 9 months or more to fill at this point."

Interesting that we hear a lot about truck ORDERS. Very little about actual deliveries... Anybody seeing actual deliveries, other than rentals??

We have 7 or 8 new KW’s behind our shop ready to go. Don’t know how many will stay or go but at least one has been given to a CLT road driver that I know of.

Judge says drivers should be paid for sleeper berth time

https://www.ccjdigital.com/judge-sa...m_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-top-story#

"The opinion by Judge Timothy L. Brooks, of the U.S. District Court in the Western District of Arkansas, says that, under the FSLA, drivers’ total compensation, once divided by the total number of hours worked, should equal at least the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. Having to account for sleeper berth time “is a big deal,” says Wayland, “because that’s a lot of time every day that would be considered compensable.”"

FedEx: Immediate Amazon Threat Overstated

https://seekingalpha.com/article/4226843-fedex-immediate-amazon-threat-overstated?dr=1

"Retailers from Walmart(WMT) to Target (TGT) to Walgreens (WBA) are ramping up delivery efforts to become more competitive in a market nearly ceded to Amazon in the previous decade.

All of these retailers should provide revenue opportunities for FedEx offsetting any losses from losing business from Amazon. In fact, Walgreens just expanded next-day, prescription delivery with FedEx. In addition, Amazon is more reliant on the USPS for shipping and a Trump-appointed commission recommended raising shipping rates. The bigger direct impact appears to the USPS, if Amazon was to fully build its own delivery network."

A lot of this these carriers bring on themselves with 80 plus percent turnover rates. Pay these guys up front good wages, and benefits, save the money they spend on recruiters, advertising, and get rid of their strings attached gimmicks where they basically screw the driver, and they might just avoid lots of issues like this...

80% turnover rates? that's low in some truckloads. I know of a fuel hauling outfit in Denver that dreams of reducing turnover to 80%. And still, coop dispatch remains at 15% turnover...year after year after year....

Coop Dispatch is, minus 15 percent turnover. Which means any driver there that has a child who wants to drive, is automatically dovetailed in. Coop has people standing in line in Cedar Rapids at the main office coming by daily asking if any driver died, or retired

I hear we are getting 10. NONE of them new, but all supposedly "functional". :idunno:
Update: we have 3 new KW’s that have been assigned to CLT road drivers with 7-8 still behind the shop.

We’ll gladly trade you our “new” trucks for your 10 old “functional” trucks...provided yours comes without the bells and whistles, literally!!
