FedEx Freight | seat belts on towmotors !

There also may be a Insurance break for the company when this rule is implemented. Statics shows that when a tow motor drives off the dock, the operator tends to jump from the tow motor and the tow motor lands on the operator killing him. They want the operator to stay with the tow motor in accidents like this.

Just cause I have to special order my Carhartt's from the "husky" part of the catalog doesn't give you the right to make light of my physical appearance! What happened to the rule on "no personal attacks?"

Just got a memo today, shops are going to be ordering & installing a new EXTRA LARGE seatbelt on Forklifts at all locations,no less than 3 at the larger Hubs,Is this all because of the Change In Operations,AKA West Drivers Working the Dock?
 
A seat belt on a forklift/towmotor???? That's like putting lace on a bowling
ball....just doesn't belong... I think whomever came up with this idea should
have their position eliminated, would sure save the compony some money they
probably thought the 1-minute idle was a good idea too.........

Looks to me like if he'd stayed in the seat, he would have been fine as well. He would have been protected by the cage. While it turned out ok with him jumping off and running, it could have easily been a big mistake.

Thats right, you are safer in the cage, I think I read that most people are killed by trying to jump off a towmotor and getting crushed by it
 
What I learned from this forum

I had never heard of a forklift being called a towmotor before. Jitney yes, towmotor no.

don't try to break one either. Had a dock assoc, try that, they deadlined the lift and sent him packing. The all seeing eye caught him in the act.
 
Forklifts need a ratchet down bar like skidsteers have on them. Would be sooooo much more efficient. I think the whole seatbelt CF came about as a cost savings idea. The insurance company said we will give you X dollars/yr break if you buckle up. I can guarantee you someone in HRO has already figured up how much less PPH they are getting for their $$$ because of seatbelt use. Insurance savings must have been a better deal...for now. When volume picks back up and they have to hire 4 more dock just to break even, it might go by the wayside.
