YRC Worldwide 1Q loss balloons as revenue tumbles
YRC Worldwide Inc., one of the nation's largest trucking companies, on Thursday reported a larger-than-expected first-quarter loss as hefty restructuring charges exacerbated a big drop in shipments amid the dismal economy.
YRC Worldwide booked $164 million in charges related to the integration of its Yellow and Roadway divisions and subsequent layoff of more than 3,000 workers. The company posted a loss of $257.4 million, or $4.34 per share, for the three months ending March 31, compared with a year-ago loss of $46.4 million, or 82 cents per share.
Revenue during the quarter fell 33 percent to $1.50 billion, widely missing the $1.61 billion expected by analysts.
YRC said the economy continued to hammer its operations, cutting daily tonnage for its national business by almost 30 percent and reducing daily tonnage for its regional business by 22 percent, once adjusted for the network changes.

Geithner: The Fox Guarding the Henhouse?
What is going on in this country? The government is about to take over GM [GM 2.04 0.35 (+20.71%) ] in a plan that completely screws private bondholders and favors the unions.
Get this: The GM bondholders own $27 billion and they’re getting 10 percent of the common stock in an expected exchange. And the UAW owns $10 billion of the bonds and they’re getting 40 percent of the stock. Huh? Did I miss something here? And Uncle Sam will have a controlling share of the stock with something close to 50 percent ownership. And no bankruptcy judge. So this is a political restructuring run by the White House, not a rule-of-law bankruptcy-court reorganization.

ATA Tonnage Index Plunges 4.5 Percent
Gains in the American Trucking Associations' truck tonnage index from the first two months of the year were erased in March.
ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said he wasn't too surprised at March's reading. "Many fleets were telling us during March that freight was getting a little better. The problem is that freight should be significantly better in March, which is why the seasonally adjusted index fell," Costello said. "While the industry is desperate for some positive news, it is unfortunate that March's data suggests the industry has not hit bottom just yet."

Marchionne's Bold World Play
It's a gutsy move. If it works out, he will be called a genius. If it doesn't, critics will say he tried to bite off more than he could chew. Either way, Sergio Marchionne is clearly on center stage for an auto industry in turmoil. Whether or not his performance leads to rave reviews is very much up in the air, but so far he's hitting all the right notes.

Return of Le Car
"When you buy a car, I hope it will be a Democratic car."
Oops. We have misquoted the president. He said last week he hoped you would buy an "American car" -- though apparently not one built in a red state in a plant owned by Japanese or German investors. He meant a car built by a company headquartered in Detroit, even if the car itself is assembled in Mexico or Canada. How confusing.
Yup. Mr. Marchionne has kept his skin out of the game for a reason. Don't expect him to reach for Fiat's modest checkbook until Team Obama can explain exactly how Chrysler is supposed to make money building the "green cars" Mr. Obama wants it to build. But you already know the answer: You, the taxpayer, have not finished chipping in to keep Fiat-Chrysler alive.

As trucking goes, so goes the economy
Looking for signs of economic recovery? Try counting the number of trucks on the road.
Trucks carry almost all the manufactured and retail goods in the country -- from refrigerators to lumber, detergents to toys. Many economists gauge how fast assembly lines are running, and how much consumers are buying, by the volume of goods hauled by trucks. But the most recent earnings reports show trucks are not carrying enough yet to indicate recovery is near.

YRC Worldwide plunges as debt fears re-emerge
Overland Park, Kansas-based YRC said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission late Monday that it needs to cut more costs and get more shipments in order to counteract the steep decline in revenue from the slumping economy. In order to stay in line with its creditors obligations, it needs to post earnings before taxes depreciation and amortization of $45 million. Stifel Nicolaus analyst David Ross said a note to clients that the company is continuing to lose business to its competitors, which is making it difficult to improve its margins.
"We have a difficult time seeing how the math works here to restore the company to profitability," he said. "It has already had its employees take a 10 percent wage cut. Plus, we do not see industry volumes rebounding this year, and industry pricing remains very competitive."

Stocks Snap Losing Streak as Techs Rise

Stocks snapped a two-day losing streak Thursday as banks rebounded and investors gave techs another go.
In Thursday's economic news, initial jobless claims rose by 32,000 last week to 637,000, well above the 610,000 expected. But economists pointed out that auto-plant shutdowns inflated the number past expectations. The total number of people seeking unemployment benefits soared to another new record at 6.56 million.

Soak the Rich, Lose the Rich
Americans know how to use the moving van to escape high taxes.
With states facing nearly $100 billion in combined budget deficits this year, we're seeing more governors than ever proposing the Barack Obama solution to balancing the budget: Soak the rich. Lawmakers in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York and Oregon want to raise income tax rates on the top 1% or 2% or 5% of their citizens. New Illinois Gov. Patrick Quinn wants a 50% increase in the income tax rate on the wealthy because this is the "fair" way to close his state's gaping deficit.

LTL industry need big volume boost for carriers to profit, CEO says
The trucking industry will have to see a significant freight volume increase before beleaguered carriers return to profitability, a leading trucking executive says.
ABF is throttling back in the recession. It eliminated 625 positions in the first quarter, a 23 percent employee reduction since the fourth quarter of 2006, when its business began to decline. The cutbacks mean the trucker will be about 20 percent smaller than it was only three years ago.
