FedEx Freight | Good Ole Fedex at it already

Meanwhile, our SCM tells us over and over that PT is cheaper to run than to have us meet empties.

It fluctuates and that's the point I keep coming back to. It's low now and the reports I've read indicate that it's going to go lower, but that's not always the case. Eventually, it'll be so high that it's no longer worth it and FedEx will go back to "take empties back". For right now and the near future, it's going to get worse for us.

Look how Watkins ran their system. A good majority of the drivers were contractors. Could definitely see them make the road runs contractors.
When FedEx bought Watkins they used that exact model in Canada. All trucks and drivers are contract model here and I believe they are paid based on productivity in the local operations, so much per bill and an escalated rate based on weight with a mileage rate incorporated based on the distance travelled to their p&d area. It’s complicated and any of the contractors or subcontractors I’ve talked to over the years either like it hate it depending on the amount of work they get.

Well the first chapter of my centers story will be told tomorrow. Our current bid has been held out for no reason. And our largest shippers have made other arrangements for their transportation needs.
Management I’ve known for 28 years is silent and suddenly have no time. No leaks,no info to me means no good news.
FedEx has stated in the New FedEx rail will go from 8% of loads to 15%. So in my thinking 40% of relays will be eliminated throughout the system. Very soon.
Maybe a shuttle run to a hub that handles rail awaits many of us.

It would be a huge fuster cluck to replace company drivers with contractors on this scale, there is no way it will happen. I don’t even know why anybody is freaking out about it.

I'm not about to predict exactly WHAT or WHEN anything will happen at Freight, but they certainly COULD go contractor for road. No "cluster" required.

They kinda already got it figured out at Ground. Every lane would have a price, and someone would fill the seats. Even the short runs would have a buyer.

I still say the only deterrent is the loss of control, and ability to cancel at will without consequence,

Personally wouldn't bet either way, but it's more likely than a SALE of the opp-co.

Yes I am, and fedex doesn't care. Safe dependable driver gonna walk if this economy ever gets better. Then they'll be stuck with the racism crying, harassment screaming ever time they don't do their job crew from now on.
But this is what they want working here, US drivers, dock workers etc. that cared and tried to do our best are a dying breed and that's sad. this company could be the best, but upper mgmt doesn't want that

Watkins in the US used owner ops and company drivers at terminals. Watkins Canada still had the O/O model but remember the Gov't up there supplies all medical and retirement. Ground and now Amazon use Contractors- Small companies that own 20-100 trucks either in one location or multiple locations. Ground did away the truly one truck independents years ago after being sued.

Fed ex freight Canada operates all contractors both city and road .only time will tell which pathway the company goes with.

Not sure your location but in Florence South Carolina they just lost one of their major shippers also
That happens when you have a subpar product at a premium price! Gonna get alot worse! They are doing something big, because they are running off good customers and not acquiring new customers.

We won't find out until it is too late.... Upper management are super tight lipped. I don't think they are even letting middle management know anything to prevent leaks..

Good luck all. Be safe.

I was using freight as an example up here in Canuckistan. I don’t know too much about how the contractor model for ground works other than the fact it was the same model used by RPS before FedEx bought them. One thing I will say to your comment ab the government paying for medical and retirement is that it’s all paid by the taxpayers. Our CPP, which is the equivalent to your SSI, is wholly paid through payroll deductions and matched by the employe. Not one red cent comes from the government and is a forced deduction. The government controls the distributions to those entitled and uses the fund as a slush fund whenever they feel the need. Our humble dictator up here has even had the nerve to tell us that it is a benefit, not an entitlement, even though we are forced to pay into it. They do pay out Old Age Security at the age of 65 but it is barely a pittance of about $650 per month of our hard earned tax dollars. Our socialist medical is paid with our hard earned tax dollars, and although we dont pay for services rendered at the doctor or hospital, we get the bare minimum and generally have to wait lengthy times for surgery unless it’s an emergency or life saving.

Out of curiosity, for comparisons sake, how much are the deductions for health and CPP?
