Since this company doesn't believe in checklanes and the driver's don't care attitude, with the loss of their assigned equipment, get used to breaking down. Just make sure you document everything to get compensated. Keep the interior visually presentable, so if you get pulled over or questioned at your breakdown by the D.O.T., they won't bother you. Hide it, I guess and at the end of your shift, leave it there, sadly I'm tired of cleaning up after people. Don't risk your CDL- get everything fixed before you leave- put it in the breakdown section of the log, put down central, and the person you spoke with, cover yourself, you might get paid for it, depending on the type of bid you have, don't bother your CM, they just want you to make the gate of course- and you won't be compensated, you will be harassed. Calling central covers you- and the destination terminal will be aware of what's going on since the CM will most likey forget to notify them. I'm a shuttle driver, I'm not supposed to get paid unless I'm doing something productive- dockwork- not going to happen. If they paid us for all breakdowns (at the centers) this would not be a problem, since they don't pay us, most people don't bother to fix anything- it worked in the past, when the company was fined, now you do- and it's not worth it. FedEx obviously doesn't care about loyalty. As for the interior of the cabs, sadly they will be destroyed. Just make sure you get a seat cover (vented)- placards work too, driving gloves, and carry window cleaner with ammonia and towels- only clean up after yourself. Don't do anything to get fired, if you are at top scale pay, you'll be first to go. There was a reason S. Garrison assigned tractors to drivers, to make drivers feel like part of the company, pride, and the equipment looked better and the lasted longer with less breakdowns.
I don't care about the assigned equipment, as long as the equipment is taken care of. A checklane where the tractor/trailers are checked at the end of each tour, (since the majority of drivers don't do it here) is cleaned out, windows- inside and out, fueled and oiled, road ready etc...I worked at places that did this, and all the equipment was pretty much the same, even with the smoker issue- with the equipment serviced, cleaned daily- it was not noticable or an issue. Most Watkins drivers said this was the norm at there terminals/company. What a shock for them...Drivers needing extra hours or work would be happy doing this- now that most are sitting at home.
Those days are gone and this idea makes too much sense for FedEx...
