XPO | Is Conway a good company to work for?

What the heck is a motor move?

Got the application done today, just waiting now. At least I have a job, so no big hurry. Any more advice is welcomed. The more I know, the better.

Thanks.

its been awhile since i worked for conway, but a motor move just means the amount of pallets a particular shipment is on. 4 pallets=4m/m. conway can be a vastly different experience depending on which terminal you are at. the manager at each terminal creates a certain environment. (i have worked at 3 different terminals in the past). also realize if you happen to get hired during an upturn and can hang in for awhile, maybe its all good and your happy. if not
and they are really just hiring to fill in for vacations or whatever, and you just stagnate at the bottom, you probably will get tired of that crap pretty quick. (sitting home calling, not working etc.)

Here's another question for you guys. Are you only on call M-F, or does this include weekends also?

All weekend. We have city work and line haul runs on saturday. And guys come in for set up and other things on Sunday. That calms down when you move up a bit. Which in a big terminal like that you will move up pretty quickly if you hang around.

In my opinion NO....but for a new driver it may be a good move for you...I worked there 7 years and couldnt take the bull**** anymore...if you can handle working the dock...unheated docks and working all hours of the day and night sometimes in the same week...but make no mistakes its a dock job except for the few top drivers at each terminal...the supervisors have a tendency to talk to the drivers with no respect at all..I am actually surprised that I didnt see drivers hitting some of these bosses....they change rules on a daily basis.....but they are a solid company and if you can handle them it could work for you..but it is a very stressful enviorment...while i was there i saw 90% get fired to the 10% that retired...not to mention the new drivers that cant handle the schedule changes and lack of work and just quit...there are drivers there that think they are the best thing since sliced bread....you have to try it for youre self...and there are more drivers that hate them hate the job and hate being there but with the job market the way it is if you are a new driver you will make the best money at conway...the only way to find out is if they offer you the job take it....if you like it stay if not get out...dont make the mistake i made and be miserable...and remember this if this is youre first driving job other companys dont treat thier drivers like this place does...at least most dont

heres a way to describe it...its a job that expects you to be there on a 2 hr call...and if you dont work and say something...thier answer will be if you dont like it there is the door....2 hr call is normal but if you dont work they are not concered....if you quit they will hire someone else...they alwats have more drivers than they need just incase it gets busy..GOOD LUCK...but you will get home everyday...if its busy you get 10 hours off so hopefully you dont have a long commute...eat shower sleep and go back

There are usually plenty of extra runs on the weekend at a large center. Also don't listen to people that say that they used to work here.. they couldn't hack it or got fired, so they have an ax to grind. Just do a good job and earn respect just like any place else. Haha some folks think they own the place and dont want to get along with anybody..I hate working with people like that, and conway usually will weed these people out..and these are usually the ones on here complaining about the company.. listen to the people that still work here.

You will find out within the first few weeks if this is where you want to work. A bigger terminal like St louis will offer more opportunity for work as they are a 24 hr operation. Every terminal is run differently, but for the most part it is volunteer from the top and force work from the bottom.

When you first get hired, do you do a little of everything until you can bid for a start time? i.e. City, linehaul, dock (apparently alot from some of the posts, lol.) One of my buddies works at UPSF and used to drive, but now he works overnight on the dock.

You'll get assigned to city flex or linehaul flex when you're first starting out.. but either way, you'll probably be doing dock most of the time. Then when you get some guys under you, you can bid and you may get a choice. We have very few "dock" bids (at least in the terminals I know of) because everybody works the dock to start or end our day, from the greenhorns, to the linehaul guys making 100,o00+ per year.

UP here, we dont have much weekend work. There may be a few saturday morning drop and hook at our big local accounts, but that's always taken up by the senior city guys looking for an extra buck. As far as calling goes, city flex calls in at 830 for start times, linehaul flex calls in at 1700. Your prospective terminal may vary...

We have one flex board. It starts at midnight.

as far as weekend work at the bottom you wont see it much unless it involves a snow storm;;;but you will need to be on call from sunday midnight to saturday afternoon...i can tell you this during the week and i was a linehaul driver...all i did during the week was work sleep shower eat and go back to work....but if u r going to st louis its a bigger terminal ....i was out of one of the smaller chicago land terminal without a reship and the tm was the biggest problem...he was a guy that loved to mess with drivers for the slightest infractions...he was a great accountant but a horrable manager(my opinion)..and he kept the crap stirred up at all times but it was with everyone csrs dsrs supervisors....i think he was picked on as a kid and now with the authority position he in my opinion abuses it....the thing is it has many good points but also has many bad points and you need to find out for youreself if you can handle it....but seasoned drivers have the hardest time because they see the bad points quickly....the school grads they try to mold into what they want..as they should i guess....the job will work for you as long as you always look busy ....you may not be busy but make sure you look busy......i spent too too many weekends wondering how they wer going to mess with me on monday...it shouldnt be like that...check to see if that was just me being parenoid or if it was happening to alot of guys...plus they have a new scorecard a point for late a point for damage a point for injury a point for calling in sick points points points....eventually they add to a termination...even to the 30 yr guys

another well put reply, i to am from a chicago land terminal without a reship. the company is what it is and getting worse, but the biggest problem is local management and how they have their favorites who can do anything they want. thats funny what u said about your TM being picked on as a kid. i wonder if we're from the same terminal ?

it would be interesting to see the numbers on how many new hires make it to the 5 year mark. also, how many EX-drivers from conway as compared to the other ltl's. from my personal experience it appeared drivers would leave conway and want to go to fedex, but never the reverse.

I found most guys were very helpful....the drivers help the new guys....read everything I said because what ive told you is the truth...good and bad....for a new driver you have to get a year in somewhere before anyone else worth a damm will even consider you.....its a solid company but they can be very hard to work for....if you have a problem with bouncing from nights to days and back or dont like working in the cold this job is not for you....but there are guys there that this is the only job they have ever had and are doing fine....or guys from small towns without alot of opportunity to find better...when i started there was a pension 401k match insurance was 2% of what you earned..it was a great job...but because yrc gave a paycut to thier drivers conway took all of that away from us...again took there was no vote they did it because they could...they do what they want when they want...they also stole a years vacation from all of us....then posted a 31 million dollar profit...what made the job great was the benefits and they took it all away on a moments notice..and said if you dont like it quit...this is what made the job horrible for me....i never got past that...now what ive posted is the truth some may not like what ive wrote but cant denie its the truth,,,....if u have a chance to go conway or fedex choose fedex but go go somewhere because to need to get started somewhere

V[/. Every time I start to get in a hurry,I remember the 5 weeks of vacation they stole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Then I take a break

I been here about ten years I have never seen a Fed Ex Driver asking about working here nor do I know of any that do work here !!

But I do know many Ex - Con~way Drivers that work for Fed~Ex

I think I know what terminal that is... I went there once during linehaul training and my trainer and I got sh*tted on. we get there: "you wont have any vias tonight".. get asked to stay for a few more hours: "you wont have any vias tonight".... get asked to finish loading a subservice trailer: "no vias tonight"... got finished loading that subservice trailer at 6am "youre going home via Gary"

I had ten years with Con-Way Freight.

And for reasons I won't go into here I left and went to FedEx freight.

I was shocked to discover the amount of people at FedEx who were one time employees of Con-Way. There are many more than one might think. And after two years I am still meeting ex Con-Way Freight folks.

We all have varied and personal reasons for our decision...I just didn't expect to find so many ex com padres with whom I share a common background.

Quite stunning and very unexpected.
