About a month ago, I was told, at a regular customer, to be aware that Panther was going to expedite one of the shipments that was listed for ABF to pick up...so I was not to pick up that shipment....one of three the customer had for ABF. As luck would have it, the Panther driver showed up at the same time as I did.....in a small panel van.......to pick up a 2500 lb. skid. He had the skid placed right against the back doors....I had asked him whether that was a good place...or should he have it moved up in front of his rear axle? His response was that "it would interfere with his sleeping room" if the skid was any farther forward. When I asked him if his panel van was a one ton panel van,...he got kind of confused, and said he could "haul up to 9,000 lbs.", and then reversed himself when I asked if he was talking about the GVWR....he wasn't really sure if his truck was a one ton, or a half-ton (single tire rear axle on a Ford van...). He was really pleased with Panther....said he had been with them about 4 months, and was making 34 cents a mile,....he didn't say if he owned the van, or was getting a wage from an owner. My opinion.....very unprofessional. Didn't know....or want to know, any laws about overweight, or hours of service......all he knew was that 4 months ago, he was out of work, and now he's making 34 cents a mile. Since then, at our terminal, we've had several Panther drivers.....all in ,I presume,...one ton panel vans....come into our terminal to have us transfer freight from one truck to another. As there is a safety issue here, and the Panther drivers do not seem to know their weight ratings , or the laws concerning such,...I have told our members to ask to see the Owner's cards to insure we aren't overloading their equipment. I would recommend all terminals having Panther coming in to perform a "switching" service to insure the vehicle loaded is properly weight-rated. On another note,.....I guess it's technically true that ABF didn't buy Panther,....or Albert Moving and Storage, for that matter,.....but as ABF provides 90% of the revenue for ABC Corporation,....one wonders where they got the cash to do so.........
