CF name taken by Con-Way

what does con-way stand for? abbreviation of consolidated and freightway?

And by the way the original start of this thread was because of the name???

Well they had it from the start. As, posted before. So it is no big deal to me. I just see it as con-way nonunion.

This is where your wrong Brutus It does effect your family big time and that is why alot of guys just cant give it up.....CRAZY
poor brutus he dont have a clue i think most of us spend more time with coworkers at work or driving down the hiway with them.an wind you get home it time to get ready to do it all over again.the family is usely sleep wind when i am at work an when i get home the wife is going to work an the kids are at school. so you get close to some of your co worker like a family.

i really dont want to get into a pi**ing match here folks, but i didnt know CF specialized in NEXT DAY/2 DAY freight? if they did, i stand corrected.

as far as cheaper labor costs go, and if you are only talking about hourly rate, CCX makes more than the union.
I hear you on both parts .... but I meant when Con-way was started, the labor costs were less by an extreme margin. The original Con-Way also had a truckload division ( CWT ) that paid an insulting amount per mile to the road drivers.
That was my point about cheaper labor costs.
Someone else has already replied about the 2 day freight and Next Day .... everyone had that towards the end, that's what it took ( and still takes ) to be competitive.
I also understand in today's world a man has to do what a man has to do ... family first !

the only reason you get close to a co-worker is so you stab them in the back.remember i know and how you treat people.I'll say it again i have no family at work just co-worker.my family is at home.now i do have Friends at work.

so it is all right 4 brutus to call me a back staber RIGHT what up with that didnt he make a personal attack frist or is all right for him to?

It is in MY OPINION that some people call work "family" and some don't. I feel we have closeness at our facility, and we like it like that, BUT, there is occasional "back stabbing" as well, in isolated situations. We are all grown up enough to deal with it and move on, and still be there for each other. I have seen many examples of other "co-workers" spending off time helping someone move, or fix the tile floor, etc.

It is in MY OPINION that anytime you spend a lot of time with people, through good and bad, it is family like! :)

TO MODERATOR: BEFORE you "ping" me for being off topic, please read ALL posts here, thanks!

your both wrong on this.you can say what you want about the company but not the employees.attack the company not the working guy.
I dont attack the working guy. Or the company. I worked for Con Way also, Though, shortlived. I state facts. I have nothing against the drivers of conway. When i was there all they did was trash us cf people. Drivers and mgmt. We were trashed at portland and the go. I was at both. I had 18 years at cf and was proud of that. We were one big team.

Rest assured, "EVERYONE" here is treated equally. If you have a complaint, PM the Mod, Super Mod, or Admin of your choice and your complaint will be reviewed and addressed. :smilies-19296:

It's not so much the hourly rate as it is the benifit package we get.The union driver doesn't pay for medical and doesn't have to contribute to the pension;I believe you guys pay into both,Union drivers are gaureented 8.Where I see some of your guys go home with less than that ,So it is actually cheaper to work your drivers than it is for union workers.
And for every buddies BIG BUDDY :ranting2: (BRUTUS) the get over it doesn't always work,I didn't work for CF,had a lot of friends that did, but went thru the same thing at redstar. So until you have to go thru it yourself YOU have no right to say GET OVER IT:shock: CRAZY
After reading 29 pages or so of this thread I see a pattern emerging. All the companies that are out of bussiness are union companies. Smith, Mclean, CF, Trans Con, Redstar, Carolina, etc. I can't believe that management absolved all these companies by themselves without the blessing of the IBT. As far as guarenteed 8, company pension, fully paid benifits, paid sickdays, etc, that's a great idea, but times have changed. Yes, Conway was way ahead of the rest of the industry by having one person drive the truck, break their sets, move freight on the dock, fuel trucks and not have "specialists" in the industry. Why have one guy on the clock while anther guy does the work? If you look at the industry today alot of the companies are following the Conway example, even some 'very close to being union companies'. As far as "taking union freight" Conway rates were and for the most part still are higher than other companies rates. Conway runs "close to the bone". There are not "extra" drivers that can be called in when someone calls in sick.I met alot of union drivers and not just drivers but Steelworkers, Mineworkers and Garmentworkers who took total advantage of being protected by the union.I guess what I'm saying is all of these closiers and sales were all of our faults by becoming complaisent in our positions and not staying involved and attuned to what is going on around us. Don't be satisfied....be better. Press on.

all union not so what about brown thurson bowman and there other shortline nonunion carrier that shut there doors out there after 1982 and anyone in freight before that time knows why

You mention most of the companies that went out of business were union and for the most part you are correct I do not how long you have been in this great field of transportation but it seems you need to do more research. Some closed due to poor management some closed because of the unions work rules, but in my opinion you can put the blame on the government when they deregulated the trucking industry, basicly to break the unions.Once it was deregulated, the discounting started and when you had cheaper labor you could go ahead and give bigger discounts because your overall labor costs were less. Then when the union carriers tried to meet the discounts, the o/r began to shrink thus the closing's started. The government won with the help of companies like Conway Estee's Old Dominion etc:hide: And as long as your doing your research find out what happened to Conway eastern :chairshot: :chairshot: ....CRAZY

Please....Enlighten me

I was hauling steel in the late 70s early 80s through Union strikes, steelhaulers strikes, deregulation, imported steel that was subsidised by foriegn governments. I've had airlines cut, pins pulled, tires slashed, and was escorded out of Buffalo and Pittsburg by police and tha National Guard because people were shooting at trucks on the Pa. pike and the N.Y. thruway. Yes. I'm new to the freight business with "only" 11 years in LTL. I got into the LTL end of transpotation because this is where the money is. Rates for owner/operators haven't changed for 20 years. .85 to1.10 a mile. It was time for a change. I was hired by Yellow only to have them go on strike so I hired on with Conway in '95. I have a family to provide for and, like you all, will do what it takes to insure security for them. I thank the IBT for the wages that I make, but here's where I have a problem with all the Conway bashing that goes on in the industry. So once again "enlighten me" as to how some people on thes boards want to see Conway employees lose their jobs and suffer a slow death! I've lost out through the years and have paid my dues, but I was never so bitter and spiteful as to want to see people lose everything and die a so death! No I'm not an expert at "freight history" so if I'm not receptive to all this hate and discontent.....well bite me!
