After reading 29 pages or so of this thread I see a pattern emerging. All the companies that are out of bussiness are union companies. Smith, Mclean, CF, Trans Con, Redstar, Carolina, etc. I can't believe that management absolved all these companies by themselves without the blessing of the IBT. As far as guarenteed 8, company pension, fully paid benifits, paid sickdays, etc, that's a great idea, but times have changed. Yes, Conway was way ahead of the rest of the industry by having one person drive the truck, break their sets, move freight on the dock, fuel trucks and not have "specialists" in the industry. Why have one guy on the clock while anther guy does the work? If you look at the industry today alot of the companies are following the Conway example, even some 'very close to being union companies'. As far as "taking union freight" Conway rates were and for the most part still are higher than other companies rates. Conway runs "close to the bone". There are not "extra" drivers that can be called in when someone calls in sick.I met alot of union drivers and not just drivers but Steelworkers, Mineworkers and Garmentworkers who took total advantage of being protected by the union.I guess what I'm saying is all of these closiers and sales were all of our faults by becoming complaisent in our positions and not staying involved and attuned to what is going on around us. Don't be satisfied....be better. Press on.
