Yellow | Smith System Safety Training

At 881 this training is being overseen by a company man.
He was a Teamster and defected to YRC. May be the best place for a person that had his special spot under the desk of many offices at the terminal.
After the defection he was able to negotiate a couple of flat knee buddies to help with the Smith System training. They hold bids but are allowed to move around their start and stop times along with 6th and 7th punches. They work ahead of senior men and also get their 12 hour day's too.

When they came up with this training schedule it was suggested that they may want to run it by the local to get their blessing. The reply was we don't need no blessing from the local!! These words from a Teamster city driver.

Now they have scheduled drivers with early and late start times to not come in at their bid times but slide the start time anywhere from 3 to 8 hours to accommodate their special status. Why can't the company man do this training at negotiated start times ? With this schedule some drivers do not have 10 hours off duty. Management here has always looked the other way on these HOS violations if you are special.
Problem now is they are running out of special people.

Nothing wrong with the Smith System training son. Just the seniority violations that go along with it.
Seniority violations? Im interested in this seniority violation point.could you explain that?
Everyone, FYI any Teamster that trains other Teamsters on Smith System must complete 40 hours of training from Smith System. And to retain their teaching certificate must do 24 hours of recertification every 3 years.
There is nothing easy about getting or keeping the certification.
In Chicago Heights only the trainers, 5 stewards and 3 other Teamsters, are having their starting times altered. The Teamsters being trained can only have their time moved 1 hour either way. Per our work rules.
To be brutally honest when reading some of posts on this forum, the ability to clearly communicate ideas and concepts is pitifully lacking. And that skill is required to train, as is the responsibility of completing the associated paperwork.

I think this is the problem especially when it comes to OT ,6th/7th punches‼️

ARTICLE 5. Section 1. Seniority Rights

(a) The application of seniority which has been accrued herein shall be established in the Supplemental Agreements.

(b) Seniority shall be broken only by discharge, voluntary quit, retirement, or more than a five (5) - year layoff.

(c) This Section shall apply to all Supplemental Agreements

It DOES NOT APPLY to company LEAD MAN who wants to be a steward. He's above the contract. If management needs anything, they go to their HEY-BOY. As in hey, boy, let us write him a warning letter. Or, hey, boy, no one can tell if you are a Teamster or a member of management.

Exactly! .. And that is why the Position of "Trainer" is not put up to bid.... Seniority does not qualify a person in the skill set required .....

Its not about the seniority of the trainers or the fact that they went on a company paid junket to get said training.
It's about bid drivers being taken off their bids and cheated out of their daily overtime.

One other critical characteristic of a trainer. The credibility with the brothers and sisters being trained to listen to the trainer.

If they can't afford to have a short day and be off early once every 3 years....then they need to do something about that...It's not the companies fault..besides isn't a little recurrent safety training worth it....

So are you saying, " make sure your brain is engaged, before putting your mouth in gear"??????

Is the OT you speak of legitimate ? Or is it the clock milking type I see daily by the same individuals????

Really!!! If a job is up for bid you must be qualified to bid on it (that's in the contract too) I don't care if you're name is Smith and you teach the class now the only requirement is how much suction you have!!
Right now at 511 we have a man that doesn't work like the rest of us pops 20+ hours a week OT and walks around trying to tell other Teamsters what to do! Now he wants to hook his buddies up on the Smith and they are not qualified yet!
Spin it anyway you want seniority is the only thing left so why don't we **** that off too!!!,!

If this company worried about moving freight a lot of things would work themselves out‼️ Our TM is more worried about who's who on Truckingboards than he is moving freight‼️
We have that problem too.
Not moving frt and letting it sit. For numbers. Frickin numbers.
We loose customers... Very good customers with very heavy items that actually you cannot damage. But it sits and the customer goes elsewhere because we don't get it moved in a timely manner.
C'mon people it's not rocket science. It has been this way since time began. They just try to make it so complicated and it's not.
Move it from point A to point B.
But they go from point A to Z. And pics customers off.

Ask bigtruk. To call for. An audit.

Why would you let anyone but a super give you work orders?
I will take suggestions and help anyone that needs it but when someone actually tells me what to do.....?...... I know what to do. I don't.... We don't need more people doing that. Tell em to F off and get a real job.
