You got that right HS about guys bugging out to buy their own tractors to be their own bosses. For example we had a 20 plus year vet who quit last year who bought his own tractor and is hauling containers from local ship and rail yards. Another 15 year vet left last week and is doing the same thing. I talked to another old timer with the company and he’s on the verge a buying his own truck and joining that crew.
All that we’re getting to replace these seasoned vets are just kids out of driving school. Not looking good for the company to grow their business!!!
Losing experienced people that were invested and gave a ::. Replacing them with young people that don't care about anything at all. That's not a good way to grow a business ? Huh, somebody should make note of that. We got our day time line haul coming back and being sent out in the city everyday. They are just picking switches. But we can't even rely on our new hires for switches. So they are working these guys with 30 years in, 12 hours a day. And it's going to run some of them out the company, and the rest of them to bid very differently next year.
We can't hire anything. There have been a few good guys come in. But they don't last long. And are looking while they are working here. Lining up their next gig. Just using this as a stepping stone to what they want. Most of what dockhands we train, do it knowing that with the raise in income after they get their license, that even if they have to pay it back for leaving, that they will be able to afford leaving after they get that CDL. Jobs everywhere in this town. Pick what you want. Garbage trucks, Wal-Mart, AEP it's so wide and varied. XPO is making zero effort to retain any talent. The competition is way ahead on compensation for drivers and dockhands. So we don't even have a good pool to pull from and train as drivers.
It's an awful situation when you can't keep the old guys or the new guys. Usually a company will focus on one or the other. XPO has chose neither. Maybe they are gonna run line haul with drones ? LOL. One skid at a time. I wonder what weight limit and range is on those things. And I wonder how long after they launch that municipalities and states ban them like the computer driven trucks. Hey guys look, it's the future ! And it's even more messed up than the past.
