Im pretty certain ELD’s are a federal mandate, I don’t think the company has a choice not to comply.
Yes, ELD required if the drivers run more than 100 air miles away from origin.

Straight truck trash pickup probably does not exceed 100 miles out, maybe occasionally in rural areas but you can venture out a few times per month with paper logs.

Many small container and dump haulers are still on paper legally

Agreed.

"According to a notice published in the Federal Register on Oct. 25, the exemption relaxes the requirement that shorthaul drivers using the records-of-duty status exception return to their starting location within 12 hours of coming on duty.

FMCSA’s exemption will allow drivers operating trucks to collect waste and recyclables to return to their starting point within 14 hours instead of 12."

Pre-AOBRD (ELD) we always had to fill out a (paper) log, if over 12 hours from clock in. It sounds like the (newly granted) exemption "relaxes" that requirement to 14 hours.

The part I find difficult to comprehend is this part:

“FMCSA has analyzed the exemption application and the public comments and has determined that the exemption, subject to the terms and conditions imposed, will likely achieve a level of safety that is equivalent to, or greater than, the level that would be achieved absent such exemption,” the Federal Register document states.

If true, everyone should get the exemption, since they predict a level of safety that is equivalent to, or greater than, without the exemption. Stupid prediction, IMHO.

Who wants to bet, they will push THAT exemption even further, using the "unforeseen delay" clause?

Pretty soon there will be so many exemptions,to the HOS,for different types of work related to trucking, they will have publish a manual, or create a web site, for law enforcement to carry with them to know what they all are...

You can be exempt from HOS laws entirely if first approved on the second Tuesday of the month of March if your operating conditions are within or equal to the operating conditions of a company that drives fewer than 10 miles annually on public roads and/or incorporates a special training program to ensure that all employees are, in fact, robotic in nature and function.

Industry Comments Lean Toward Adjusting HOS Rules, FMCSA's Jim Mullen Notes

https://www.ttnews.com/articles/ind...d-adjusting-hos-rules-fmcsas-jim-mullen-notes

"In its ANPRM, the agency sought answers from stakeholders in four general areas:

• Should the agency expand the current 100 air-mile “shorthaul” exemption from 12 hours on-duty to 14 hours on-duty, to be consistent with the workday rules for longhaul truck drivers?

• Is there adequate flexibility in the adverse driving exception that currently expands driving time by up to two hours?

• If the 30-minute rest break after eight hours of driving did not exist, would drivers obtain adequate rest breaks throughout a daily driving period to relieve fatigue?

• Do you have information that would support reinstating the option for splitting up the required 10-hour off-duty rest break for drivers operating trucks with sleeper-berth compartments?

The majority of responders recommended eliminating the 30-minute rest break. Mullen said many drivers claimed they don’t mind taking 30-minute breaks but would rather not be told when to take them.

Commenters also responded in favor of allowing sleeper berth drivers to divide their rest time instead of resting for 10 hours straight. The top vote among responders was for dividing rest hours into a 5/5 split."

Big Brown's pedal-electric eBike hits Seattle waterfront

https://www.fleetowner.com/running-...m=email&elq2=de2fe7dd15d44df2a02f469f89c03e14

"The eBike cargo vehicles feature roof protection for the UPS drivers, keeping some of that Seattle rain off their helmets. They've also got modular compartments that hold up to 95 cu. ft./ 400 lbs. of cargo and slide onto the bike's trailer and lock into place, so those compartments can be loaded up ahead of time elsewhere for driver-riders to swing by and swap out."

And... Boardwalk friendly?

He must pass the robot exam. This one is simple. Does Yakov require or engage in the function of sleep? If he does not, he is a qualified robot who may work for $0.10/mi.

Growing Shortage of Drivers Remains Top Trucking Industry Concern

https://www.trucks.com/2018/10/29/growing-shortage-drivers-top-trucking-industry-concern/

"A shortage of drivers is the top trucking concern, overtaking how many hours truckers can drive in a day..."

"The industry’s second most important concern is gaining flexibility in the federal hours-of-service rules."

"The third most important issue was retention – keeping drivers whom motor carriers already employ to blunt the effects of the drivers shortage, which the ATA estimates at 63,000. Retention rose two places in the survey from last year."

"A hot-button issue last year, a new regulation forcing drivers to operate trucks equipped with electronic logging devices that digitally track the number of hours they drive daily, has faded as a concern of both motor carriers and drivers who responded to the survey."

"The lack of enough parking spots for trucks rounds out the survey’s top five concerns but remains as the No. 2 issue among commercial drivers."

The story says the truck backed in, they unloaded the hot tub, then after the weight of the tub was off the trailer, all the sudden it was too high??? Hot tub must have weighed 42,000lbs?By the picture, I am gonna say the container hooked the steel beam and pulled it out.
And I checked with big Dave Outwest. It was not a coop truck.

"AUSTIN, Texas — They heard some optimistic projections from outgoing American Trucking Associations Chairman Dave Manning, a touching speech by new ATA Chairman Barry Pottle, and ended the evening hugging the stage to the hard Southern rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd."

What the hell? I know container chassis' usually have leaf springs but I don't think a hot tub could create that much flex in them
