ABF | Compensation Statement

Hah! You're showing your age, Brother.......(...which means you fit right in with the rest of us.....).

And you also, Brother.......I got hired in '75 for Gateway,...worked city for them about 4 months,...then a road driver passed away in an accident about two weeks before my 21st birthday. Offered me a steady road job, just had to wait until I turned 21.

On the evening of my 21st birthday,.....I went to Secaucus N.J,..off Rt.'s 1 and 9. Took me all of 10 hours. Everyone else did it around 8(...prevented the mini...). Never was in N. Junky before ever in my life......Culture shock.
Also,....last two months of Gateway operating a Bunkhouse under the dock. Sleep?.....yeah, right.......
They started to bed us at the Spanish motel,....beside the Holiday Inn,...at the junction of 1 and 9.......Heaven compared to the bunkhouse,.....if you didn't mind the random gunfire.......

Gateway only ran Secaucus or Philadelphia out of Pittsburgh. Philly was a pain,....Drop and hook,..on to Secaucus. Rarely to bed in Philly,..off Cottman Ave.

After I got laid off from Gateway,...I immediately started with Werner-Continental,...whose terminal in Secaucus was in the middle of the swamp.
Four months, and Hall's bought Werner........."You want a steady job, kid?.......move to W. Middlesex!"

No thanks.....Go hit the list,.....
although this is way off topic, does anybody remember Bermans Motor Express? My stepfather drove for them for many years.....still remember the black trucks

Now in W. Penna., we had Breman’s Express out of Leechburg,Pa. My father was steward at the Lawrenceville terminal. When Breman’s bought the old Associated Transport terminal in Monroeville, Dad became chief steward.
Bermans didn’t have authority to run into W. Penna., but some people confused the two companies on occasion .
Breman’s was a small regional carrier with two terminals,....maybe a hundred guys total.

Were they pink? :smile new:

Which one had the pink tractors? Now that you mention them,...through the Fog of years, I remember them. Tose, or F & W?
Brockways or Whites?

And,.....who the heck picked that color for the tractors? I can see them fitting in around the Greenwich Village area of NYC,.......A lot less in Jersey City......

F & W had pink tractors for a while Canary. No idea who or why that color was picked.

Tose was dark blue I believe.

Sitting here reading about Tose reminded me of just how lucky I was. One day at Tose I had load of Clorox bleach and had pulled up in front of the stop. I checked in and went back to the tractor and saw that I had forgotten to set the brakes. I was on level ground at the top of a down grade. I was a very lucky casual.

We store that in our learning experience segment of the brain & don't make that mistake again. There is a saying that good judgment comes from experience & a lot of that is from bad judgment.

I would leave the transmission in reverse when I backed into a dock in case I didn't set the brakes.

CSPF narrative again?? Look around at some of the other funds. The Western Conference might be a good starting point. Let us know what you find. We’ll wait.

With all due respect, looking at another fund doesn’t do me a damn bit of good if I’m not covered under that pension plan... I would be under CSPF so that’s the only one I really care about... folks in the other plans sure don’t seem to be excited to open the pockets of their mostly or fully funded plans to those in CSPF whose plan will be insolvent due to no fault of the members of the union...

Unfortunately, other funds can’t open their pockets and pour money into the poorly-managed ones that are in the red zone. The Central States Pension Fund has a very long history of unscrupulous financial conduct dating back to the 1960’s, maybe even the 50’s. One only need watch the movie ‘Casino’ to verify that, and that’s just one example of many. My point is that any new successful union drives would have their choice of which fund to contribute to. They wouldn’t be bound by geographical location. My fund (Western Conference) has a few states within it that are back east.

If memory serves song, you started a new job recently?? How is it going?

Going well, although the money isn’t great. I’m the orientation instructor for CFI here in the Atlanta area. I love the job even though I don’t drive anymore. I’m thinking I’m going to have to get back into the truck though.

So if I’m reading you right, a new member can choose which fund to be involved in? That would be wonderful, as I’m in CSPF country. I’ve got my own retirement account but I wouldn’t turn my nose up at pension money if it were available.

Maybe after this election,....certain pieces of legislation would move out from under the big pile of ignored Bills on,..a certain Senate Majority Leader's desk.
Maybe a rescue of CSPF may be in the works. As you say,...the CSPF, and other plans,....are in bad shape through no fault of the participants.
It may be a Left-handed blessing that the Treasury Department denied the first rehabilitation plan proposed by the CSPF Trustees.
If,....the election goes a....certain way,......there may be a rescue of troubled Funds like CSPF,...and a restoration of full benefits.
Those Funds (like mine...) that already had the 30% rehabilitation cut forced on them by the Treasury Department,......well, it's too late for a restoration of the full benefit we were promised.
But,....a change in leadership might have some of that...buried legislation....dusted off.......

(....and Bro. Song.......As an instructor, I hope you stress the First Rule of Trucking to your new students:....."NO FLIP-FLOPS!"...)

Damn straight. You wear flip flops to my orientation and you get sent back to the hotel to change or home if you weren’t smart enough to bring shoes with you.

In regard to pension rescue bills, no matter which side of the aisle they come from, should not be the burden of the taxpayer. Bail outs to companies and banks that have occurred in the past shouldn’t be the taxpayer’s responsibility either. As far as the pension is concerned, the Union itself should be the ones to fix this problem. Mismanagement, graft, whatever the case, should have been monitored by the union as time went on (i.e. the movie Casino, The Irishman, etc) and dealt with internally. I’m not a union member, why should I have to pay? It’s the same as in dealing with right to work... I believe if you work in a union shop you should be required to be a member in order to reap the benefits of representation... and you should pay your dues. Not a member? Don’t want representation? You don’t pay.

I think most taxpayers would be more than willing to bail out CS, for the simple reason I've never owned a pair of flip flops.
If not, just send a small donation to me, the number is BR 549.
Not sure this would be tax-deductible.

Well,......the argument could be that,....any government subsidy is selectively picking “winners”. That would be our tax dollars going to farmers, manufacturers,....or anyone pleading Unfair Advantage, and finding a sympathetic Congressional ear.
Yep,......the Union “leadership” under Hoffa Jr dropped the ball badly on pensions. My pension was solvent enough in 2003 to have to offer “13th checks” to retirees. Federal rules don’t allow pension funds to exceed 100% funding......At that point, companies don’t have to contribute to the funds.
But the Funds........due to capricious Federal rules,.....aren’t allowed to bank those funds.....for a future emergency.
Like what happened in 2008........

So,......due to blundering leadership,.....and discriminatory Federal rules........some of our pension funds took bad hits. No fault of the employees.
Just like the farmers claiming tariffs are hurting them,......and they receive taxpayer subsidies.

Farmers are worth more than....truck drivers?

I definitely agree with the “No dues, No representation”. There are some amoral, unethical people who want the Government to force Unions to represent them, and save their jobs,......all the while not paying dues to support that very representation.
What kind of a slimy jerk would contemplate that,.....all to save the price of a couple of cases of beer? I’ll bet they think they’re pretty smart.......

Oh,.......and when you send them back for steel-toes,.....tell them no baggy shorts and “muscle” shirts either,.....especially if their body mass index is in the “obese” level.....
Thanks, Brother,........you’ll do us all a favor......

Hog wash canary, what federal rule mandated a specific discount rate MEPF's had to use?

I'm sure you are familiar with DEMOCRAT Jim Oberstar's valiant fight to get FEDEX EXPRESS out of the RLA and into the NLRA. If you recall IT WAS SENATE DEMOCRATS, john rockefeller and robert byrd who SAT ON IT, IGNORED IT. During the biden/obama administration. OBERSTAR's fight with his own party was valiant, he forced 16 temporary FAA reauthorization bills, because he wouldn't give in to the anti labor biden/obama/byrd/rockeffer. DEMOCRATS biden/obama/rockefeller/byrd got rid of JIM OBERSTAR the longest serving member of congress. Threw him to the TEA PARTY wolves.
