XPO | Where is our freight

Everyone's heavy. With the low dollar, nows the time to buy. We are heavy.
I'm not heavy over here, but every van, reefer and heater Day & Ross has at their disposal is full to the back door. We're cubing out even if we're not grossing.

Lots of TFI units moving around. Loomis, Canpar, Canadian Freightways, TST. Even Reimer's running LCV's again occasionally.

Goes way deeper than driver loyalty... A critical component to profitability is to eliminate damage claims... Every additional time a shipment gets handled, the higher the likelihood of damage... the more often a shipment gets swung, the higher the claims rate goes. Combine that with the fact that sub-service carriers usually do not have safe-stack trailers, and the insistence to maximize trailer cube and damage is inevitable... 60 Million $$ plus per year in damage claims tends to hurt the bottom line big time.

OD barn where I'm at recently took on a former Con-way account... While being hauled by Con-way, the OR for this account was approx. $1.35 -- For every dollar in revenue, it cost Con-way $1.35 to cover the damage claims (which were due primarily to sub-service moves). We (OD) have been hauling this damage sensitive freight for going on 2 months now and have had only 1 damage claim... Primary reason: We don't use sub-service carriers

I know this because I bailed on XPO/Con-way immediately after the purchase...
For the life of me I don't under what you people are talking about. How the hell does sub service carriers damage our freight? Our freight is picked up by XPO,loaded on a sub service air ride trailer using our racks by our quality people, and driven to the other end and unloaded by our quality people??? For Christ sake put the blame where it belongs. There is and never was any accountability at Conway/XPO. When the powers to be get their heads out of their asses and get rid of the dead weight we that survive will be much better off.Until then grab a van and enjoy the night.

How many times have we watched a six quality drivers try to get an oversize skid off a trailer, each one using short blades because they are better than the next guy, each one destroying it more because everybody's to f-in lazy to get or wait for long blades. If someone in charge grabbed each one of those guys by the ear (after removing their hoodies with the Bluetooth under it)and escorted them off the property, you would probably see a change in the way we do things. Again time for the higher ups to get their heads out of their ass.

All I know is xpo didn't want Conway LTL but had to take it along with what they really wanted, Menlo. And by the looks of things they still don't really want or care about it, a company that big could sell it or purposely run it into the ground and write it off before they unload it. Now you're panicking that it actually might be happening and you can't go anywhere because of your so-called hourly rate, so you have to stay on the ship whether it floats or sinks. Just reality, I'm jumping ship and following the freight before the driver market gets swamped with Conway drivers doing the same.
I did that too HE a couple months ago, best move I've ever made! Took a $2.50 an hour pay cut to leave, but it's ok, my first check was bigger than the biggest one I ever got with conway with all the hours I'm getting now! Don't miss it one bit! Never have to drive a sterling no more, never sitting at home, they call me on my off days to see if I want to work, every truck I drive is 15' or newer with a radio in every truck! No more dock work for six hours at -20 degrees. And my favorite, no more dealing crappy FOS's & TM's, my supervisors and management are strangely nice and respectable! And, and did I mention no more sterlings, no sitting, no more waiting every night to see if you're running! I know my schedule 4 weeks out every day, oh I could on, good luck everyone, miss my coworkers but definetly not the job! Best wishes and I'm hoping things get better for the drivers soon!

What company did you go to driver? It sounds great , maybe other drivers would follow your example if they knew what company was doing things "the right way".

It isn't the sub-service carriers nor their equipment per-se that is the fly in the ointment - it's the choice to utilize them in the 1st place. Every shipment that moves sub-service is handled at least 2X more than it would be if left on (and within) the existing XPO/Con-way network. The more you handle the freight, the higher the damage claims. BUT...when you combine the insane insistence to "cube to 100%" even non safe-stack equipped sub-service equipment, then the damages go up exponentially. Now, to some extent there is some truth to the contribution of "Don't give a Shi* attitudes" of those handling the freight to damages, but I simply don't believe that bad attitudes are the root cause of damages running into the millions of $$ per year (year in and year out).

If you really have a commitment as a company to maintain high standards for on-time & damage free delivery of the shipments entrusted to you, then you must keep custodial control of those shipments. You can buy a whole bunch of equipment and fuel and pay the increased costs associated with wages and benefits for just a portion of what is routinely being shelled out in damage claims (and this is just the $$ costs involved - nobody has even touched on the loss of customer good will that is caused when you gotta tell them we tore up their product).

Sorry Q-ball but you are dead wrong. We get vans out of St. Louis along with sets, vans out of Nashville along with sets , vans out of Hagerstown along with sets. ECT ECT The freight is handled the same amount of time van versus set. Trust me when I tell you I'll take a van any day over a pup. The root of the problem is the I don't give a shi! attitude and fact there is no repercussions if you damage freight. That is the root of the problem no accountability , no discipline ,no monitoring. We don't have to talk about dissatisfied customers because they don't stay with us. It's that simple. That is what truly blew me away about lean. You would be disciplined for not hanging up a broom, putting empty barrel number three on the empty barrel number four spot. But you could watch a dope with short blades Try to pick up a 5 foot deep 3000 pound fiber optic roll Worth about $15,000 ultimately completely destroying it and everybody including management shaking their head saying what a dummy why doesn't he just get the long blades. The problem is again very simple Conway/XPO don't give a shi! why would anybody under them give a shi!. I truly believed with this new Company we could turn things around for the better. Unfortunately nothing is even close to changing for the better. If XPO has a plan it might be in their best interest to let the rest of us know what the hell is going on because it don't look good so far and keeping everyone in the dark isn't making things better.

I look at some shipments that come across the dock and say, "just throw it in the dumpster now and pay the claim". You know it's not going to make in to the customer in one piece. It's sad really. I agree with the lack of dicipline and who cares attitude by all involved. I have been involved with many aspects of training drivers and dock workers and believe there could be some improvement. Without accountability, it means nothing. Put that together with the fos' need to make all the numbers and you end up where we are now. I've had the wait and see attitude with what's going to happen with xpo and so far, I'm not impressed! Just seems like more of the same.

Agree with several of you. Nothing's changed yet. Again last night, told to cram everything in one. And take an empty home. Again I refused. Took two nice 60 cube trlrs home. This has to change. Soon.

If the consensus of the above is true, and XPO is staffed with a bunch of Don't give a shi* types, then I cant help but feel that the organization is SUNK. Admittedly, it has been some time since I found myself on the FAC dock, but when I was, the position that U-north speaks to always prevailed... Common sense still counted for something. We took a lot of pride in cramming those trailers full, but took great care to not tear the freight up either. All I can say is YIKES !!

They drill this numbers bullshit into the fos's. No logic anymore. I'm really starting to push back at this, and have gone to my regional and am prepared to go higher. It's asinine. I'm told " you don't understand". When I ask why I'm cramming and jamming, with an mty going home, I get a stunned look. No answer. Frustrating as all ****. I'm just going to do what I think is right and rattle some chains.

Good call, UN...a 'non-answer' from an FOS is infuriating! Keep doing what you're doing. They'll get the message. Eventually.
